Please Help with my Transmission Problems

OK. My clutch pedal started acting up 80 miles of the way on my trip. When I pushed the clutch pedal down, it stayed down until i pulled it back up with my toe. 170 miles later, 1 mile from my house, I try to put the car into first when the light turns green, but the shifter won't go into any gears and the clutch pedal stays down! I turn the car off and try again, no luck. I turn the car off, and start messing with the shifter, and manage to get the car into first. I attempt to start the car in first with the clutch pedal pushed down, but the car lurches forward as if i was trying to start a car while in gear (like in Canada), but won't start. I turn the car off again, and with alot of effort i manage to get it out of first and back into neutral. I start the car and try to put it into first again with no luck. I try reverse and it makes the noise that the car makes when you mishift into reverse when you mean to shift down into 4th!

After that I turned the car off and gave up. Some nice dude helped me move it into a community.

Is the problem with the clutch, flywheel, or transmission in general?

A very good guy on the altimas board said this:

from what you describe, it sounds like your clutch slave unit has taken a dump on you. standing in the front your car, right side, look at the face of transmission case. there should be a small two-bolt hosed mechanical device attached to the transmission case. this is the slave unit. it may be leaking. if so, have it replaced asap. your shifter will not engage properly if the device goes ant-up.

If its a problem with the clutch slave unit, how much will that run me?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

im down with the same troubles as well, finally taking the car in this week ! my max is doing the same thing. i jammed it in reverse about 3 weeks ago and cranked it up and took off flying backwards, lol. i ended up in the neighbors yards and had to park it there for a day or so, lol.

fought it some more took off in first and got the chariot back in my own yard. to think i have to drive it like this in first gear to the dealership, glad my hazards work !

bump to the top, i just checked my clutch fluid reservoir and it is empty ? Without fluid, your clutch pedal is useless so you won't be able to shift, or to drive. - found on the www

Got it fixed. $70 for towing and $600 for the job. They replaced the master and slave clutch cylinders, the hose, and the fluid. The guy gave me 10% off on the job though, because he knows my dad and I well. so the total was $530+$70 for towing.

Daaaaannnngg. Is that what they charge to replace a master and slave cylinder? Seems high.

Now it feels like the clutch is slipping! BUt i drove 500 miles right before I had the master&slave cylinder problems without feeling the clutch slip once!! They said they messed with the linkages because they seemed messed up. Could they have made a mistake that is making it so that the clutch doesn't engage all the way!?

Thanks.
