decided not to mod my max
decided not to mod my max
after seeing what a 240sx with a rb25det can do i no longer want to mod my max i'm keeping it at a grocery getter for my wife maybe a few things or two but not the serious moding i was planning(turbo, exhaust, coil overs etc...)
that 240sx with juts dropping the rb engine did 12.9 at 119mph with a very bad 60' of 2.6(the track is the worse around here) on street tires on first run and they discovered the bearing from turbo was shot so that means that well set up that thing is capable of low 11's cost
cost
3500.00 engine
1500.00swap(wiring set up and few thing more)
1000.extra parts
he already has the car but i have seen a few 95-96 for as low as 2500 over the net
7500-8000 for a 11+second daily driver? plus a huge aftermarket support
don't get me wrong i still love my max as much as the first day but after i saw that thing beating fy 350z's theres no doubt in my mind what i want
a few pics of the car

theres a few on e-bay also 240sxforum.com its agood place for info also try nico(nissaninfinityclub) and a few other forums as for the engine lots of places for what little info i have now the best bet is to look for the whole front clip cost like 300-3500 bucks but almost everything is included is a very common swap you may need mckinney mounts the fabricated special mounts for this job thats all i can tell you right now i'm on a relearning process just like when i first started learning about the max
dyno run from the 240sx before the 350z blue paint click link and look for the first file and remember save as

Yeah, The performance mods for the maxima are very limited. All i usually see are people speaking about taillights and wheels and exhausts, barely any fi talk. I would like a 240 very much, but maybe a 91-94 w/ sr20det. The urge of the ability to spin 360's in an empty parking lot, and mod it up greatly grows within. I still love my Maxima tho, even if an ecu upgrade isn't readily available yet.

im probably the only one who would like a 240 fast back. i used to h8 em but i saw one that was just so damn beautiful. plus i seem em much cheaper than the s14 240's. an sr20det or maybe an rb26 from an r32 wth a nice fast back and id be golden. me and my friend wanted to get 240sx's. he wanted the s14 and i was gonna get a fastback and we were hoping to make a magazine cover being 2 of the fastest 240's in S FL. maybe in the future when i could afford to build and maintain 2 cars simultaneously i can have my 240. i hope they are still popular 4-5 years from now lol.

and who cares whats popular...bandwagons are
so many ppl that have bought 240s just bc its the trend nowadays
But i still love 240s...still wish i had bought one over the maxima sometimes
You can still get rid of your Max. The last thing this site needs is a bunch of ppl that wish they had bought other cars. Seriously...How can you be an enthusiast if you're not satisfied with your purchase?...
I must say the 240sx is a very sexy car. Yea its the trend right now because everyone all of a sudden is a drifter but I loved the car way before I knew what drifting was. I'd take a 240 in a heartbeat if I had the money and time to fix it up.
It's not limited if you just expand your vision. We have as many performance mods as most other cars, just harder to get. And you have to remember that the Maxima aftermarket is just kicking up as the cars get cheaper. More aftermarket companies have started offering parts this past year or two than at any time ever.
Of course all you see is people speaking of taillights and wheels, most guys on any automotive forum are not going to drop the money for serious FI. It's the same on the 240 forums, the Honda forums. If you'd check the FI forum here, you'd see a lot of FI talk. We're figuring out new things every day.
And right now, everyone and their grandmother is buying a 240 and swapping the motor. It's the thing "cool kids" do now. So sad that everyone is jumping on the 240 bandwagon. Jacking up prices for those that can actually appreciate the car for what it is. There's actually a guy around here in Atlanta with a stock KA 240 that actually has the license plate "DORIFTO" Yeah, he's going to win a lot of drift competitions in a stock 240.
Don't get me wrong, I'm probably going to have a 240 at the end of the year. Just buy a shell, and build it up as a project car. They're very nice, my friend's SR20 swapped S14 ran a 12.8@124 on 350 whp and street tires. The car now does 448whp, so I can't wait to see what it will run on drag tires.

man i agree, im going to do the same thing (different car) but will also love on the max, and continue to slowly mod after I add a new chariot to the collection. you have got the right idea though, cruise in the max and haul freaking tail in the 240
actually a 240sx (or better yet a 300zx) is the car that I had my mind dead set on. However, being 16 and all, I now own an extremely quick, and an extremely underestimated sedan that suits my needs very well. At least where I live, good 240 shells are very hard to come by. You will be very hard pressed to find one without a lot of rust damage, respectable interior, etc. I was actually a very avid 240sx researcher, and I know a lot about the cars with sr20's. I know we're talking about rb25's and all that but this is something to take into account. Besides all of the stuff that you need to make the engine run (updated fuel pump, intercooler since the stock one is a side mount, etc.) you'll still be running with a 14 second car, no matter what kind of driver you are. Dammit I wish I had the effort to go back and search for that post, but he "reawakened" the whole forum, or at least the noobs (inlcuding me). The common misconception about jap-engine powered 240sx's is that they are extremely fast once they get that engine in, however, it takes much more $mula$ in order to make it track-fast. That right there is my .02, along with many others that actually own silvia powered 240's. Also, in regards to the rb series engine swaps, engine bay fabrication is needed. One more thing...some people were saying that maxima's lacked aftermarket support for our cars, just think about the lengths you'll have to go to get skyline parts, an engine not even offered in the US, at a reasonable cost. This post is long enough right about now...

like i wrote before i still love my max as the first day and i'm more than eager to see new mods for our cars like the ssr intake manifold things like that so for me buying the 240sx is giving flexibility to have a N/A car(max) and a FI car(240sx) my wish is to have my max as fast or faster than the chariot
hey, lol , what about krismax, or nealoc (4th gen N/A monsters?
i want to run a few 13's and then i will layoff on the performance mods. and continue to restore and pamper the chariot.
i would just rather have one car to daily drive (max) and another to race and let rest (lol !) Keep the wear and tear down and mileage too.
The VQ30DE is tough as nails though, I have 155,000 plus miles, she is my daily driver and 1/4 mile queen.

lol i went from (2) 240sx coupes to a maxima, and u guys are talkin bout doin the opposite...if u got the money and u gonna keep ur max as a daily driver then go ahead and get teh 240, but if a 240 is ur only car, i dont think its as practical as a max for obvious reasons. and also u guys that get 240s becareful they are becoming the new "civics" so theft is probably gonna go up. just my two cents.
Man, the maxima is a 4 door FAMILY sedan...in other words, its a sleaper no matter what you do to it..
I love to go fast, and i love to smoke cars at the track...dont get me wrong, but nothing in its category would ever beat a maxima, there might be "faster" options to choose from, but they are not even as reliable nor as sleek as a maxima. The aftermarket selection for a maxima IS NOT SMALL its not big...but its sure as hell not small!
Like someone said b4 there are new things being learned about our cars DAILY, and thats what exites me about my max. I might not be able to smoke a 240, but i can sure as hell fit more people in it, and STILL be comfortable, and not have to worry about my car breaking down all the time. The maxima is not a race car, and you guys that bought it thinking you were gona turn it into something of that nature are retarded.. the maxima is a faster than the norm family 4 door sedan..
if you wanted fast, get something different, dont fantasize about something you dont have. be happy with what you bought, and if your not happy sell it!
the maxima is a rare car to mod, no one really has them and fixes them up, they might not be fast as a bat outa hell, but they turn heads if you trick em out, thats all that really matters...
the maxima overly rises above its porpuse, whether it be a track car, or a daily driver, or the hoe mobile...
bow down to the max...

OMG...I knew you had a fast max, but I didn't know that you had that many miles on the car. This is what it's about ladies and gentlemen...Low 14's on a car with 155,000 miles. Not many cars can hold a candle to that...maxima bliss...

oh, and xerox, I think you're selling ours and your own car a little short...I agree with most of what you said, but with vision, patience, and technical know-how, our beloved vq's have proven to pump out over 500+ whp using a turbo set up. All exhaust mods, slicks, and nitrous have let one of the org members hit high 12's in his 4th gen, and is sworn to still be used as his daily.

i bough my used maxima because of it was cheaper than same year accord never knew it was so fast and that it can be modified the way some people have done.
Its a great car no doubt about it mine is almost stock and like i told before low 14's high 13's is my goal as a N/A AUTO as for 240sx i haven't bough yet(thats why i wrote planning) i want to modify the hell out of it while keeping it as a daily driver
I have no choice but to buy another car after my wife's car got stolen a few months ago and since the max is so comfortable then i decided to keep it as the main car to go out with kidos and all that and buy another i can modify and why not another nissan after all the prove to be good cars(few issues but none to worry).

yea, i understand.. im not underestimating the VQ, not at all..
on the other hand not all of us have 4grand to dish out just to hit 12's...
the max is fast...FOR its class in the "car world" but not fast against a car that is supposed to be fast, like a 240...get my drift? (no pun intended...

FWIW, 240's run like high 15's stock. Unless you swap the motor, they're not fast at all. Even if you swap the motor, it's still not that fast until you mod the SR20 or RB, or whatever. 240's were never meant to be fast, Japanese Sylvias are fast. But the American 240SX was pretty much geared toward women and style.
At the track, I see swapped 240's with mods running like 14's. There are only 2 around here that run 12's that I know of. I've beaten 3 or 4 SR20 240's already at the track. I ran 13.9's, they ran 14.3's and 14.4's.
Last time I went to the track, I saw an R32 skyline run mid 14's modded. That was so sad.
Point is, the Maxima isn't slow when compared to these cars that are "supposed" to be fast.

Like I say above, I still love my Maxima.
But I definately want an appraised LSD for my Maxima, then I'd be set for fi. I started a GD on LSD's from KAAZ not too long ago, but people are still just more interested in taillights and rims, re-asking what suspension or y pipes to get, swy bars, pillar gauges, exhausts, etc..Let's get this GD foe KAAZ LSD going. It would make other mods pale by comparison, and maybe bring good business to Cattman Performance!

Not quite sure how fast the USA 240 was SUPPOSED to be. As Nissan elected to cut it's ***** off by offering the KA24E truck motor vs the JDM SR20DET. Stock for stock a 4gen will beat a 240sx in the 0-60 and 1/4 mile. You would think if it was SUPPOSED to be fast, it would a bit FASTER stock.

well, i dont disagree with yu guys at all! the maxima is a very fast car indeed, but in reality there are alot of other cars out there that could be modded to be faster than our maximas for half the price it costs to mod our max's.
i love my max, and like everyone else i HAVE thought about selling it and buying a 240 or a 300z...but, i always fall back in my right sane state of mind.. cause afterall, the maxima serves its purpose as both a speed racer and a around towner...
it just gets pricey since we dont have the market selection like honda's and the like. what we pay for headers ALONE you could get like a bolt on turbo kit for a civic! lol...i dunno about that, but you get my point...
i wont ever sell my maxima, and i know they are capable of being faster than hell, but then again isnt any car? with the right amount of money you can make a GEO hit 11's...
it all really depends on the size of your pocket book with this stuff...but for me, i dont have the money to be modding the max as fast as i want, but the one thing i enjoy the MOST about my max is that its unique, and people dont know its fast...
everyone fixes up civics around here, and to be one of the VERY FIEW people in nor cal with a nice maxima, it stands out...thats what i like, the speed and horespower comes after that.

Modding a Maxima is not as expensive as you think. Conversely, modding a 240SX, 300ZX, Supra, Civic is not as cheap as you think.
Maxima headers are $800 from Cattman, a lot of Honda headers are $1200. Yeah, you can get cheap OBX headers for Hondas for $200, you can get OBX headers for a Maxima for $300.
Hondas need built motors to make power. You're not factoring that into how much it costs to be fast. I can build an 11 sec Maxima for cheaper than it would cost for my brother to build his Prelude to run 11's.
Everyone thinks that they can just swap an SR20 or RB25 into a 240 and run 11's. It ain't that easy. Stock, those motors put out 200 and 250 crank hp, that's it. In the initial poster's pic, that turbo alone will cost more than the $1K he's claiming he needs to run 11's on that RB25. The Greddy manifold in the pic is already $600. The RB25 has little more aftermarket support than our VQ's. His numbers are way low for what it would take to build an 11 sec 240 SX.
You can mod any car to be fast for cheap almost. Heck, didn't JimE run his '95 Maxima to 12.1 for like $2K? Cheap and fast Hondas always look like theft recoveries. If you're willing to go that ghetto, your Maxima can be fast for cheap too. I know guys with Hondas that have spent way more than I have for their turbo setups.

it all really depends on the size of your pocket book with this stuff...but for me, i dont have the money to be modding the max as fast as i want, but the one thing i enjoy the MOST about my max is that its unique, and people dont know its fast...
everyone fixes up civics around here, and to be one of the VERY FIEW people in nor cal with a nice maxima, it stands out...thats what i like, the speed and horespower comes after that.
i love my max, and like everyone else i HAVE thought about selling it and buying a 240 or a 300z...but, i always fall back in my right sane state of mind.. cause afterall, the maxima serves its purpose as both a speed racer and a around towner...

the max is fast...FOR its class in the "car world" but not fast against a car that is supposed to be fast, like a 240...get my drift? (no pun intended...

)~120hp wet shot of nitrous ($700)
Y-pipe ($200)
Intake ($120)
catback ($300)
slicks and rims ($500)
So basicially less than $2K will get you deep into the 12s with a 4th gen.
S13 - S14 240SX US Spec = KA24DE 2.4L I4 w/ 155hp motor w/ low end torque and limited modding ability
SR20DET = 2.0L aluminum block motor w/ turbo putting down 200-250hp at the crank stock (also significantly lighter than the KA) Almost direct bolt in b/c it's the stock 180SX/Silvia motor there. Some people get near 500whp w/ stock block
RB20DET-RB26DETT = variations of the motor found in different model Skylines. All are iron block inline six motors w/ some turbo setup. Significantly heavier than even the KA motor and relatively difficult to put in if using a RB26DETT. Makes between 200 and 250hp at the crank stock. Can make almost 500hp stock bottom end if done right. The turbo/injectors/manifold on the RB20/25 aren't suited for heavy boosting so they require upgrades past the 300hp range.
Seriously, it's almost the same money to try a VQ30DET swap into one. You have to do a custom turbo and 350Z tranny but you need to do significant upgrades on those other motors too. An aluminum block V6 might actually retain some balance rather than stuffing a huge overweight iron inline 6 motor in. In comparison, the Maxima isn't as trendy to make fast but 240's are a dime a dozen and very few are fast still. It was tons of fun lining up against swapped motor 240's and one JDM RHD Silvia and destroying all of them down the track.
The most powerful one I've seen is Batlground's SR20 powered one w/ plenty of head/cam work it puts down over 450whp in one of the most beat up S14's I've ever seen. It ran back at 350whp and did a 12.7@117 on Yoko A032R tires.

It would make other mods pale by comparison, and maybe bring good business to Cattman Performance!

And yeah, when lsd's are available (well "off-the-shelf" is limited to the phantom grip mod) for a 4-door sedan, that's saying A LOT for the modding potential of this sleeping beauty!!

**** the 240sz/300TT, costs too much to buy and too much to mod to make faster than a modded Maxima. Maxima+boost+spray+gawdwhatevainternals ==
