EVP Code Update/Question..
EVP Code Update/Question.. Need Your Advice..
So today I took my Maxima over to the dealers guy (under warrenty) to check why the CEL was on.. He as aspected found the same code (which I already knew) for the EVP vent control valve.. He then put the car on the lift and looked around the area on the gas tank (as expected because thats where the valve is).. He then told me "we are going to clear the code, and turn of the CEL light, if it comes back on we will no it is not the gas cap, and that there is really a problem which we will take care of"..
I got this done like 8:30 this morning, so far the CEL light has not came back on..
My question:
Do you think doing this at first was acceptable before diving into changing stuff, like the connecters etc??
Or do you think he just wanted to get me out of there??
Do you think he could of done something to make sure the light does not come on again without fixing the problem?? (I know that sounds like a stupid question)
Thanks

I had a similar problem
I have a cracked/leaking EVAP canister. It shouldn't affect driving in any way, but you will fail an emissions check unless you get it fixed.
When they pull the codes, typically it resets the ECU and clears the CEL. Mine came back within about 45 minutes, so I got home, cleared it, and it was fine for about 2 weeks, then it came back. Now I just clear it once every couple of weeks and check that there are no new codes coming up...
Not sure why there's such a discrepancy in the times it takes to show up, but there you go... I'm guessing the mechanic just wants to eliminate the obvious stuff before he starts taking your car apart (driving around without the gas cap in properly will give you the same code I think)...
What was his estimate for repair? Mine was aroung $300-$400, And I'm pretty sure I can tackle it myself, just can't find any bloody replacement canisters now that I want to do it!
Anyway, good luck, check the FAQ's if you want to learn how to read your ECU/CEL codes.

Hmmm
Thanks for your reply.. I know it does not effect how the car drives but it needs to get fixed.. I am not paying anything for it so who cares (warrenty).. I was just tring to figure out if the light will go back on, and if what they did was smart to check it first before doing work on it..
Oh, and if you clear it how do you pass emissions every year?
