stock muffler is rusting badly...

as the title says, my stock muffler is rusting pretty badly right now. is this something that should be taken care of right away or is it ok to let slide for a while? i'm most likely gonna be getting my ws y-pipe before the summer is finished, but the thought of a new muffler or even a full catback does sound pretty enticing. If it was just pocket change to me, I'd probably go for the cattman catback, but I'm a college student with a pretty tight budget. I'm working with $400-500 budget for the y-pipe + muffler(or catback, whichever I choose is right for me right now). What do you guys suggest and what also sounds best with the ws ypipe? Thanks in advance for any help.

Edit: And I forgot to mention, I'm gonna be getting the discounted y-pipe from the GD cuz I believe it is still going on. From what I read in that thread, all you have to do is call and ask about the group deal going on.

letting the muffler rust away won't do any harm to the car except it will most likely get a hole in it and sound like a ricer like mine just did. I wanted a quiet exhaust so I just got a basic muffler with lifetime warranty from meineke for $50.

Mine's been badly rusted for about 30 months or so, so I believe it's fine. It's as if the outer layer has already fallen off. Passes inspection and no noise either yet.

Mine has been rusting for quite some time as well. I was told that I needed a new one more than a year ago when i brought my max and mine is still fine. the outer layer is almost gone though.

i peeled off the outer layer....then it got little holes, sounded tinny so I got another stock muff. I would recommend a stock muffler, 4th or 5th gen....with a y pipe. Anything else is loud. Dont worry about the muffler right until it gets holes and makes annoying noises.
