Struggles to start...
I have 95 max and I also have this same problem. My Max has 140.000 Kms (arround 87,5 Kmiles) and this problem started recently.
Usually I need to crank the engine 3 or 4 times to get it started regardless the engine temperature and some times I need to press the gas pedal just a little, but once the engine is running, it runs very well with a very nice response. My conclusion is that this problem is not caused by the starter or by the alternator or by the fuel pump or by a clogged fuel filter.
I've been reading the threads about this problem and I found out that there are lot's of people with the same problem.
I've read in some thread that this problem was caused by the ignition switch witch is located near the driving column inside the car (it's a white plastic piece) witch connects to the piece were we put the key in.
It seems that this was a faulty piece on some 4th gen Max.
Before starting to check things out to fix this problem, I was trying to see what were the possible causes for this and now I'm completelly lost because I see people talking about the camshaft sensor, colant temperature sensor, ECU problems and so on.
Can we just came to a conclusion and narrow down the possibilities for this problem?

I am going to buy a bolt from DaveB and see if it helps out. I hope it is this simple to fix, otherwise I am clueless.
guys when you crank you engine make some one stand by the tail pipe to see what kinda smoke comes out, if its black smoke it means no spark or too much gas ie:fuel pressure regulator. so every one stop complaining bout you starter cuz if your motor cranks it abviously not it and its probably not a ground cuz if a ground is no good then your starter dosent work at all. like i said i think its just cuz there is no spark

i noticed a split hesitation to start. I gave it a tune up, spark plugs and fuel filter. It still did not fix the problem. It slowly got worse until finally it wouldn't start at all.
I took it to the dealer and have replaced the crank postion sensor, battery and starter. finaly the dealer found that the bad ground between engine and transmission was the cause of the problem.
