Help-a-noob out? y-Pipe/exhaust questions
My max is stock performance-wise, and I'm thinking about getting the y-pipe mod. I just have a few questions.
1) Is it fine to just get the y-pipe and mod nothing else (muffler, etc.)? Do many do this?
2) I heard if I do not mod the muffler, no extra noise is created with the y-pipe, true?
3) Apparently the "budget" y-pipe is the cheapest, is there any quality difference between the budget, warpspeed, cattman, etc? I want to spend as less as I can, however I don't want to sacrafice any quality etc.
And any other advice you can give me would be much appreciated, I'm such a noob, just tryin to learn!

1. sure, it's not going to hurt anything.
2. can't speak from experience, but i don't think the y-pipe alone would be that much noisier than stock, maybe a little.
3. i would go with budget; just look for a mandrel bend and a lined flex section, regardless of which company you buy from.

you know i got some questions on the cattman header/y...
the cattman y is "equal length" which has been made into a big deal... so im guessing not any others are.
so how would they be interchangable (cattman, budget, stock)?
does equal length mean physically shaped different? i guess i do not understand that...

It means that the runners for the front bank and the rear bank have the same amount of tubing. In other words, the exhaust gas from the front and rear banks will travel the same distance from the combustion chamber to the cat.

However, you will not get quite all the full potential out of the y-pipe.
2. The y-pipe with stock muffler will be a little more raspy. It will not be a lot louder, if you don't do anything else, but it will be louder.
3. If you can get in on a group deal for the Warpspeed, I would get that, as far as price is concerned. However, if you cannot get in on a group deal, just go with the Budget. I personally think that the Cattman is too much money. I am sure it is high quality if heavy modders like Caesar's Chariot say that they like the quality, but I still think it is too expensive and overrated. That is just my opinion though.
Go with Warpspeed or else you will regret it. A lot of people have problems with the Budget pipes. If you are tight on cash you can get an aluminized Y from Warpspeed for like $175 or so and it will still be high quality.
Just don't get the Stillen y-pipe. Pricey and 2-piece.

Cool, thanks for the replies guys.
Can someone give me an estimate on what I would probabaly be charged around to install a y-pipe? I wouldn't be able to do this myself..
Also.. just to make sure.. just modding the y-pipe for now will not impair any future exhaust mod plans, right? IE. if I wanted to get a new muffler, cat back, etc. Like many on the boards, I think I'd like a little improvement in sound, but I don't want to take it near the extremes. And the HP increase from what I read is at least 10HP.
Thanks,
Dan

You can go with either warpspeed or budget. Dont say that budget has had a lot of problems; i've seen a lot of ppl very happy with it. And to those who have minor problems w/warpspeed or budget Y's, very little modification fixes it.
I bought the Budget y-pipe and installed it myself. The rest of my car is stock(air filter and exhaust) and I personally like it that way. The exhaust note changes, but just right off idle and of course over 4k rpm. If you install it the only potential problem is the Y-pipe to Cat bolt are hard to get off. You will need wd-40. I would think the only difference in Y-pipes is the price
