Special tool needed for oxygen sensor install and which one is which?

I should be receiving a package for some used 02 sensors and want to install them but i wont be able to tell which goes into which spot and what is needed to uninstall? can i just use a proper sized wrench? or do i have to get a tool to remove it?

I bought an O2 sensor removal tool kit from Autozone and it helps out alot. Just tell them what kind of car you have and they will give you the right kit. The kit gives a few different pieces to aid in the removal and installion of the O2s. It costs like 10~15 bucks to loan it (you get your money back when you bring it back), I just ended up buying a new one for $15 from them cause of all the Y-pipe installs Ive done.

Also the O2 sensors will look the same but will have plastic snap pieces zip tied to them at different points. Also I think the rear O2 is a little bit longer than the front. When you remove the old ones you will know what im talking about.

Don't you just need a 22mm wrench?

I'm doing this tomorrow...

Thanks,

Yeah, O2 removal kit? It's a 22mm or 7/8" wrench that gets the job done guys. Just spray the old O2s with some PB blaster. After you take them out trace the wires to the connectors, one is in front of engine other is on top of the intake manifols on passenger side.

i bought this deep socket 7/8 with a little slit on the side for the wired to go through it seems to be a handy tool when replacing o2 sensors

When should you replace the 02 sensors???

I have a 98 SE w/83k and not a problem that I could not take care of myself! I have not done any 02 replacements. How would I know when they are going?

Ok guys, just finished my O2 sensors today with the help of a friend. It took us about 3 hours to finish but we took our time. I also changed the oil so that took a few minutes. Overall the job went flawlessly.

We just used a 22mm open end wrench to get the sensors off. Also soaked them with PB Blaster first and hit them with the wrench a couple times to 'activate' the PB blaster. The one in the bpipe had to have a foot put to the wrench but it finally came off. The other two just came off pretty easy.

I noticed a real difference when I drove it. A lot more responsive and the slugishness (sp?) has disappeared.

BTW I have 132,041 miles on the ticker. My baby is back Now onto the dreadful knock sensor from hell...

Later!

If you have 132K on the original KS, then hats off! I replaced mine around 75K and it drove like a new car! Just take your time and invest in some swivel sockets and extentions. It took me about an hour but if I had to do it again, probably 1/2 hour. Good luck!

138k on original here... only reason i'm replacing it cuz my car won't start reliably, and engine cuts out when engine is warm and idling. Getting 20-22mph on any kinda driving, so thinking it's o2. barely passed emissions too.

I've a '98 SE with just over 100,000 km on the odo. Last weekend I got the 34 knock sensor and 49 O2 sensor codes. I've cleared the ecu twice now and the CEL hasn't returned yet. I suspect that you should see something soon as well.

bluemaxdriver4: with your open end wrench, was there much clearance to get the one off by the front bumper? i can't seem to get my wrench in there. My crow-foot can get on it, but with and extension and long ratchet, I can't torque it off w/o it slipping off the sensor. How'd u pull this off? What [clock] position did you have your wrench in?

Also, for the rear sensor, behind the cat, where does the harness lead to beyond the grommit?

Ok, did all 3. car still won't reliably start. All I hear is "click". The starter's trying... but doesn't even turn the engine. Wondering if it's my starter... lack of torque?

Why would the O2 sensors make your car not start reliably? The car would start fine if the O2 sensors weren't even hooked up at all.
