Knock sensor and O2 sensor

Hey what's up ya'll,
I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I have a 97 Nissan Max GLE. I love it!! I have replaced 2 of the oxygen sensor and I have one more left. I also need a knock sensor. I was wondering how important is the knock sensor? My friend that fixes on my car says that I shouldn't worry about it, because it doesn't affect the performance. I still want it replaced because the check engine light is still ON. Is my friend right though the knock sensor doesn't affect performance? What is a good price for a knock sensor and what is a sensible price to get it installed for?? Let me know what's up and thanks.

PEACE

Ak

A knock sensor DOES affect performance. It sets your timing back and robs horsepower. Also, a bad KS (with no other problems) will not trip the check engine light. That must be your O2 sensors. Get rid of the O2 sensor error code and then see if the knock sensor code is still there. If it is there, by itself, change it and you will notice a big difference. There is a TON of info. on this in the stickies at the top of the page and that is where you should start so you can understand what is going on with these parts and how they interact with your car. Tell your mechanic friend that a bad KS will not affect driveability, but WILL affect performance.

From what I've read in the How-To's any Maxima older than 5 years should have the KS replaced. Mine is 7 years old to this month now and I just got these codes on the weekend.

When I replaced my K.S It felt like one of the best and most noticeable "MODS" I had done to my car, so it deos affect performance very much so, 20-30 fwhp has been noticed on dynos.
