What could be causing my high idle?

Hi guys. I have a 95 SE 5-spd. Recently my car will occasionally idle around 1500-1600 rpm instead of around 650 like it did before. It also will jump around sometimes whithout my foot even touching the gas. What could be causing this?

Thanks in advance.

Brian

Thanks mzmtg. I still have a few questions. This page says that a faulty TPS will cause, "inexplicable, 'spontaneous' DROPS in RPM's." My Idle is high but never drops really low (below what it should be). Also, the info I found on adjusting the IACV seems to say that it should be done if the Idle is wrong all the time. Mine is only really high some times. Any other things it might be?

Well my idle is around 1500 rpms right when my car is starting after I haven't started it in a while, but I think that's engine just trying to heat itself up at that point...

Otherwise I've had no trouble with random high idling, although I've had previous cars that would do that, I never really cared enough to have it checked out because those cars were almost worthless...

PCV valve? I had erratic idle problems, too high, then too low. It was especially annoying to have my RPM's drop to 300 or 400 as I put the clutch in when turning, etc.

It all started after I had the PCV valve replaced. So I just replaced it again, a cheap part for sure. That cured my idle trouble.

Good luck,
TOM

Yeah, when it gets cold out my car would usually start at a higher idle and become normal as it warmed up. It's not cold at all now and it doesn't do it just while it's warming up when it does it. It will do it while it's warmed up.

I don't know if it's PCV. Mine isn't so erratic that it ever drops below 650. It only does the slightly erratic thing every once in a while. It'll just start reving and droping (but never below normal). The high idle thing happens about half of the time I drive it right now. I'm still baffled.
