Electrical Problem NEED HELP!!!!

Im having an electrical problem with my 95 GLE. Most of the time when I start the car everything starts up electrically. Sometimes though when I starts the car the dash doesnt start up which means none of the light come on and none on the needles move. Also when this happens the window controls dont work. But the leds behind the dash still light up, my headlights work, and the entire center console works. At first I just figured I would deal with it because it usually starts up after a little while but I now realized the when the dash doesnt start up my odometer doesnt work so my car's mileage is about 10 miles off as of now (nothing really) but I dont want this to keep happening. Also I was on the highway the other day and the gauges just died while I was driving so I had no idea how fast I was going. They came on about 3 or 4 miles later but this really isnt cool. Any suggestions on what I could do myself to test it b4 I go pay $65/hr for somebody to trace it???

I'm having the exact same problem. Does anyone know what might be causing it? I made sure the fuses were good. Could it be a relay?

this is not a common problem, i dont think you will find many people with experience with this here, I think you need to take this to nissan. I wouldnt trust electrical problems with just some joe smoe shop.

Nissan should be able to figure it out.

It can be a broken wire, connecting plug or some component that either makes a connect or doesnt depending on vibrations from engine or because its starting to go bad but hasnt quite died yet. So this might become more and more frequent until it does.

To really find out the problem I think you need to get a good manual and figure out a common point where the window wires and dashboard wires come in together and see if there are any broke wire, harnesses or units. You will need to take your dash board apart most likely for this so unless u are ready for that challenge I think u will have to take it to nissan.

G Luck!

since you mentioned that your guages were acting funny, I tend to think you may want to check your alternator. I had an alternator go bad on me one time and the guages acted funny and sort of similar to this. Just a thought.

The dealer finally found the problem. He said the park neutral switch shorted and caused inhibitor relay failure. They replaced the park neutral switch and the inhibitor relay. They had to run a complete diagnostic ($140) to find this. The total bill was $418: $140 diagnostic, $160 labor, $112 parts. So if you are good with cars you might want to just get the parts and DIY. Keep in mind your short might be somewhere else, but at least you could check the park neutral switch and/or the inhibitor relay. Here is a part list for a 96 Auto (GLE):

25230-79981 RELAY $15.10
31918-80X02 SWITCH-INHIBITOR $73.96
32702-32U00 PINION ASSY-SPE $23.62

One more thing, the service manager said that usually when that relay goes out the car won't start.
