Rear strut install advice & photo

My weekend plans just went to $hit. I was putting my rear coilovers back on and broke the bolt on the upper mounting bracket. Thought I was doing pretty good at under 2hrs for the rear swap too.

The Haynes manual pg 10-2 is wrong. It says to tighten the upper mounting nuts 144-168ft lbs. Yeah, that's alot but similar to the piston rod nut and I didn't really think about it at the time. Rechecked the CD FSM and it says only 12-16lbs (much less than even the fronts).

Maybe my mistake will benefit somebody doing their own D2 or other installs.(Gotta order a new bracket on Monday from Calif).

Well I neither bought a new part or went to a machine shop. Bought a Dremmel and some cold weld epoxy. I'm rather pleased at the solution.

Finished tightening up the front susp after assembling the rears; got the ride heights similar; jumped the car batt yet again with the Optima sitting idle in the garage for 6mo now.

The ride is much firmer - "read harsh". I had little appreciation for strut valving til now. It's like I went with firmer springs but w/o bounciness. Next to cornerweight & align...

What? Those are supposed to be at like 15-25ft/lbs.

I was going to change my haynes manual, but it says 144-168 INCH lbs. Its correct but very easy to do a gotcha. Multiply inch lbs by .083 to get ft lbs. Should be 12ft lbs to 14 for 1995-1998. 12ft lbs to 16ft lbs for 1999.

Unfortunately, if you had more experience would have made the ft-lb / in-lb very obvious. For example, you probably wouldn't have gotten the nuts off if they were at that torque.

When I first saw that I KNEW there was something wrong with that.. I checked the .orgy and sure enough 12-14ftlbs.

Those are from the Progress coilovers.

This was my first time doing suspension work myself. Pulled the coilovers off, put a stock susp on. Few weeks later reversed it again. PITA as far as time since I had to assemble everything from parts but a good learning experience.

Don't feel bad dude, I did this exact same thing as well. I was rushing to get it done and didn't even pay attention to what I was doing. Broke that bish off good. Come to find out, if you drill out the hole a little, the bolt from my strut bar will fit. Plus its stronger than the stocker bolts.

But I am going to replace it anyway. I ordered the long travel mounts from the GD going on.

Later,
drew
