CV Joint Symptoms

Hey guys,

Just driving my car around today I noticed i had a weird constant clicking noise through 1st and 2nd gear - almost like there was some rope attatched to the tire and every time it made a revolution the rope would whack the underside of my car. I checked underneath it and nothing there so I am thinking it could be CV joints...

My car has 130K on it and just wondering how hard they are to replace, how much it would cost to get done, and also, most importantly if this sounds like it could be the CV joints?

Thanks in advance!

So is this all the time or just when turning? CVs only make a clicking sound when turning? Are the boots ripped? Motorvate has a writeup. should cost around an hours labor per axle (that's the quotes I got)...so probably like $50ea. axle.

my boots are ripped and i still dont get any noise but just check for rippage or leakage from joints. I hear its easier to just replace axle than to repair the cv boots.

you said you hear the sounds through 1st and 2nd gear? try getting some speed, and put in neutral and see if you still hear the noise, if you do then it might be CV joints a bearing loose or something, if your dont hear it then it could possibly be your tranny.

And you a 96 so you another potential victim of the diff bearing failure.

but CV joints arent too much to replace

the part might run about ~$140 for an axle, give or take. (not too sure on it)
Installation a shop might slap on another ~$150+

so maybe somewhere in the area of ~$300, but there is a write up on how to change them yourself if your interested in that route.

yeah i hear the noise when I take it outta gear too. I've heard it slightly in 3rd and 4th, but its VERY apparent in 1st and 2nd while accelerating. The noise doesnt increase of anything when I turn - whats the deal witht he DIF. Bearing - and I was sooo close to boosting. Maybe its a good thing to get this outta the way.

The diff bearing problem is more of a whine.

Yeah that what I was thinking, I saw that most of the people that had dif. bearing problems had them around 60K. I dont have any sort of whine, just a weird clicking noise while I drive in a straight line, somone said it oculd be CV Joints, but most likely inside ones because it doesnt click when I turn. idea's/suggestions?

you may need a new axle, or that one re-paired

it maybe a lose bearing, either way I'm sure it will need to be taken apart or it may be cheaper to either have it replaced with a new one, or if you can do it yourself, take the axle apart and inspect it yourself. there is a write up for it (regreasing the axles0

How bad a job is this, at this point I might just save all my manual labor power for the supercharger and pay 2-300 beans to get it done. Do you ahve the link for the rebuild?

This may give you an idea of how long and how much should you decide to do it yourself.

Go to the link above. I described what it would take to do yourself in detail. If your boots are split, have someone replace the driveaxles, or do it yourself (get a Chiltons manual as well). You have to do them anyway, so at least rule them out as a culprit.
