Wheel stud

As a general cleaning step i usually remove the wheels from the car and perform through cleanings every month give or take a week. I recently had new tires put on my car while i was on vacation. This morning while i was washing the max i was removing the wheels and to my dismay one of the nuts holding the front driver side wheel was awfully hard to remove. Upon removing the wheel (finally) I noticed half the stud was stripped )it actually had a giant gauge in it as well. I looked at the threads on the nut and it was almost completely stripped as well.

My question is.... how do i fix the stud??? I checked the how to's and couldnt find it. Im not yet a donating member so I dont have search abilities yet either.

Thanks in adavance

you have to pound the stud out from the back with a hammer and punch.

You pound the broken one out from the front. One hit with a sledge hammer should do it, maybe 2 or 3, you don't need to wind up, just clunk it from maybe 10 inches away.

You can tap the new one in from the back with a hammer but that will usually have it a little crooked, then to straighten it out after i've pounded it most of the way in with a hammer, I use the nut method which you just put an open ended nut on the stud and start threading it til it pulls all the way through and becomes flush. It's a pain in the *** but not difficult mechanically, just takes a while.

Crap. I just started a new thread then I saw this one. I have the same problem. The moron at Sears who put my tires on crossthreaded one of my lugs as well. I know how to replace the stripped stud, but my questin is:

will it be OK to drive for a couple days on 4 studs or no? Thanks fellas.

I had that happen to me. I got new tires and the tire shop had two of my lugs cross threaded. I broke one stud off trying to get it off. I called the tire shop and told them and they replaced both studs and lug nuts free.

Yeah, I probably should take it back there and make them repair it. I just made an appointment at a local shop here for monday @ 8 am - they're going to do it for $15, so I'm just going to let them deal with the hassle of pounding the old stud out. I don't feel like dealing with it.

Luckily, guys, this is not a hard task.
It took me like 15 minutes.
Just get your new lug stud, and hit it out the back like stated above.

Then, put the new one in....using the hole in the shield to your aide.

Then, put the wheel back on and tighten it back up.

Take the wheel back off and check if the stud dropped into place properly.....it probably did.

Put it all back together with some rust penetrator sprayed on it to prevent future lock.....or some anti-sieze.

You are good to go.

Hope this helps.

thanks bruda, it sounds pretty easy... i'll go pick up a new stud and lug tomorrow morning. if i can't git 'er done, i'll just take it to the shop and be done with it. i can handle any electrical installs, but sometimes when it comes to mechanical, i'm stupid

I had to fix this once on my gf's Jeep. Wasn't too hard, really. Just follow the other people's directions.

I was actually running on 4 bolts on my tire in the rear for while...did'nt seem to matter that much. But it was on the rear tho, front wheels may be more vital to have 5.

Took my car to just tires to put on a tire and they changed out 2 studs and charged like 20-25 bucks... if u can still drive it, u might wanna consider taking to tire shop and have them do it.
