Right front CV joint replacement

Anyone here ever replace their own CV joints? Is it something a semi-novice can do at home in an apartment parking lot? Any special tools required? I'e been reading alldata.com and my Haynes manual and it sounds do-able, but there are still a few gray areas I'm concerned about.

My right front outer boot is ripped wide open and the joint is making terrible noises. Any ideas what this will cost me to replace myself?

Thanks in advance

Mike

It is pretty easy. esp if you're like me and have done it 5 times. labor is only around 50 bucks at a shop anyway.

ouch! that is high. you can get your cv joint rebuilt for 100 bucks. if you have the new cv joint and just want the shop to swap it out it is about 50 bucks.

thanks for all the help. Where can I go to get a new one? I'm pretty sure I need a new one as it sounds pretty bad and there is a huge rip in the boot.... unlikely it can be rebuilt or re-booted.

Thanks all

Mike

you can either get a remanufactured one from autozone or advance auto for like $75, or you can a get a new one from raxles.com I think they are like $130. The process of replacing them is pretty simple, just need some leverage for some of the nuts.

Shop around, there should be a few places that charge exactly $100 for part and labor.

I know of 2 places in Houston.

Just out of curiostity, what happens if you have bad CV joints for an extended period of time. Any chance of being stranded somewhere? What are the places in Houston that do the job for 100 bucks? That seems very resonable.

My mechanic said that my boot was broken, is he refferring to the cv boot? Also he took it for a spin and turned steering wheel all the way to make some turns then said you only need to replace the boot and axle seems to be fine. Now is the axle same thing as cv shaft? I dont get the terms. What exactly does 'entire cv shaft' also mean? I drove with broken boot for now like 1k+ miles but the wheel makes squeeking noise now too whenever I pass by low or high bumps.

$100 CV shaft, part and labor.

Here's the one I use:

Tony
2207 Bingle, Houston
713 972 1255

There are at least two more places in Houston. I don't remember their addresses, but they are in the Asian center on Bellaire.
