Can someone clear this up, I've been getting different information from different places. I have error code 0407 (Crankshaft Position Sensor(REF)). I browsed the forums for a while and figured out that this is the sensor on the passenger side of the engine, behind the belt. I called the dealership to get a part number, and said the "crankshaft position sensor" and then to double check I said it's the one on the passenger side of the engine. She said "no, thats the cam sensor".

Could someone clear up this confusion. I need the crankshaft sensor, I believe it's part# 23731-35U11, and located on the passenger side of the engine. If I have this mixed up please help.

 

There are two crank shaft position sensors, one is called REF and is located down by the lower crank pully. The other one is called POS and is located under the car on the transmission bell housing. The Cam shaft position sensor is indeed on the passenger side of the engine, only it's up on the timing chain cover just above the idler pully.

The car starts, every now and then it turns longer than it should, and the ECU is returning code 0407 - Crankshaft Position Sensor (REF).

 

i got same code, thanks to this thread i know where it is kind of. Anyone got a pic?

 

same code here too, sometime it starts like a fu(king dog.

PLEASE DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE SENSOR..... my max would start very stubbornly and when it started hard it tripped the crankshaft position sensor (REF) code. I replaced it with a new one from the dealer. It still starts hard sometimes and still throws the same code. if i could do it over again i would not have replaced the sensor which is NOT the cause of the hard starting. i wish i stll had that $80 in my pocket

 

what causes the hard starting then? A new Fuel filter is supposed to help but I already did that.

 

That pic is NOT the crankshaft pos sensor - REF. The one you're looking at is the camshaft pos. sensor. The REF is BELOW the belt on the bottem of the car - it's in between the crankshaft pulley and the lip of the lower oil pan

 

the one u highlighted is the cause of hard starts, and soemtimes no starts at all. When i had a supercharger, car would cut off while driving because of that sensor. But like sexima said, thats the camshaft not crankshaft.

I have a bad camshaft and my crankshaft went off, i guess i may not have to replace the crankshaft after all

 

I got this code :
DTC 0101 is caused by the Camshaft Position Sensor (Phase). This sensor is located on the engine front cover facing the camshaft sprocket. It detects the cylinder number signal. The Engine Control Module uses this signal to control spark plug firing order and also to sequence the fuel injectors correctly. If the CPS is bad the ECM will fire the plugs at the wrong time, or not fire them at all. This would account for a no-fire symptom.

I misread the crankshaft for camshaft.

Well, if you need either the crankshaft or camshaft sensors - i've got spares off motors if ya need em.

Are you saying that even though I have the code for Crankshaft (REF) it's not the cause of the problem? Does the cam often trip the wrong signal? ... All I know for sure is that if I reset the ECU, eventually I'll get a really bad start, the light will come back on, and the code will be 0407.

 

I'm new to the forum. It seems tons of people have the same problem I have on my 95' maxima. The hard start or no start problem.

I get the same 0407 code for the crank shaft sensor. I've replaced the crank shaft sensor and the cam shaft sensor. But the problem still persists -just like 95MAXIMASexy.

I'm wondering if anybody has suspected the wiring harness to the sensor. Does the sensor harness go directly back to the ecu or does it go somewhere else.

I figure if the harness is indeed bad I could by-pass the wiring and run some new wires directly the the ecu. I just need for know if the sensor wires go directly to the ecu and I need to know the ecu pin-outs. Does anybody know??
