You should be using premium gas, 91 grade and up, all the time. That is what nissan suggests.

why 91? does it effect performance. I seriously can not afford to fill up with 91. (California sucks!!!)

BUMP! My knock sensor is bad too and last time I gassed up I was debating if I should put midgrade (89) or stick to premium (93..I love Florida, 93 is so much cooler to say than 91, MUHAHHAHAHAH). I decided to stick to premium, but that midgrade sure was tempting. Can we use it if our knock sensor is bad and we know that the timing is retarded already?

screw that, to fill up i always go down to the track and fill up on 116 race gas. only costs me $120 to fill up the tank, jk...in NJ, we have a few places that have 94, but most are 91...you should always get premium, better for your engine...I just think of regular as the gas that my mom's kia uses, and that just makes me cringe.

Im in NJ too, and I have not found one place that sells 91, most are 93, SOME of teh real cheap stations have 92 (most still have 93), Sunoco carries Ultra 94 for like 6-9 cents more than their 93)

ok guys, Disclaimer: that was a joke about 93 octaine in Florida, come down. This thread is not about that, it's about if we can use a lower octaine gas on our cars if we know that our knock sensor is bad.

Bob Marley says: "Relax, don't worry. Cus every little thing, is gonna be alright!"

Always use premium. Your bad knock sensor was probably the result of using lower octane gas.

dont know if that is correct, but it says in the manual that premium is recommended for performance ONLY, meaning it doesnt do nothing to the car but make it less pushy

how is 93 better for the engine than 89? 89 burns little quicker than 93 thats the only difference, just a matter of octane concentration in them. from what i know 93 or 89 is ok for maxima since maximas arent lamborginis or other fuel hungry cars. well if you mod the heck out of your car than I agree 93 should be used. I personally use 93 though since I dont mind paying the extra 3 dollars for a little better kick.

There are 101 threads about this. Bottom line is that its your car, and you put whatever you damn well feel like.

...but it is recommended that premium is used

Wow so much fu(king misinformation in this thread its spinning my head...

Not all parts of the country have 93 or 94 Octane, it depends on the state and their emissions laws. California for example has 91 as their highest octane.

NY just banned 94 Octane in January which only Sunoco sold, now the highest you can get is 93. Sunoco now carries 91 AND 93 here in NY.

Even though I know most people are not going to listen

USE ONLY 91 OCTANE OR HIGHER IN YOUR MAXIMA

If your knock sensor is bad your in retard mode all the time so it doesn't really matter if you use the lowest octane.

And I really doubt that using the lowest octane will "make" the knock sensor go bad....they just go bad like anything else.

Not once did I ever put anything BUT premium in my car. It just goes bad with time. Most go bad right around 100k miles (I have 106k). Using a lower octaine gas should have no relation with the knock sensor going bad.

Knock sensor never throws a code.. its a ghost code..

reset the light wait till it comes back.. and more than likely it will be an Oxygen Sensor with the code.

most of u guys wont believe me on this one, but if u want to come to the bronx i will prove it. Im pulling codes for an o2 sensor and a knock sensor..... no joke, ive had these codes for a good 2-3 months now.. and doing reasearch to calculate how bad my gas mileage is, i found out that i actually get better gas mileage with the lowest grade gas compared to filling up with the highest grade... i scratch my head at this one.... and i do drive pretty conservately.... this has got to be one of the funniest things that happened to me....

Got'cha. But I can't afford it. Also, I don't have a passport so I have to send my girlfriend across the border to get that octanage gas (I am in Juarez, across the border from El Paso) and it's a hassle. I tried, when I had a bit more money, octanage boosters. Didn't eliminate the pinging.

Please send me a private message.... do you at least get more milage when using high-octane gas? Or will I just be moneyless yet somewhat happy that my engine is not pinging?

The knock sensor does too throw its own code. It just doesnt light up the CEL on its own.

I had a lone 0304 code for almost a year before I finally replaced the KS.

But if you do indeed have a bad knock sensor then your timing is not advancing like it should, hence a higher octane gas would not make a difference. You should compare the octane levels when you are sure you knock sensor is working correctly.
