While driving in big storm, my ('97 Maxima) wipers suddenly stopped midway, and would not continue working. I tried turning them off and on, but they still didn't work. Then a couple of minutes later, they suddenly began to work again. About 1/2 hour later, the same thing happened again, and after 2-3 minutes, they began working again. This went on for a couple of hours, and it seems to happen everytime I drive in a somewhat heavy rain.
Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this?

loose wire possibly? my friend honda civic hatchback has the same problem with the rear wiper. it doesnt work and when it does it gets almost like its stuck halfway, it was a loose wire in his. we figured it out when it would stop and start working with the music in his car. his sub was vibrating the connection.

Thanks for your help. I'm pretty sure that it's not a loose wire. Since it only happens in moderate to heavy rain, it seems like it may have something to do with heavy usage, water or humidity. Also, it seems to start and stop at somewhat regular intervals during these times - such as every five minutes.

I've seen this sort of problem mentioned elsewhere (with other cars), and people have made these suggestions:

- wiper may be overheating
- wet, disconnected or damaged resistor
- faulty/cracked solder joints on the wiper motor circuit boards and at wiring harness connection
- loose wiper relay
- loose fuse

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of problem with a Maxima (or other Nissan), and have any idea what might be causing this problem?
