MEVI install problems always

Well I have not had the best install luck with my MEVI. Now it is installed but I cannot get the summit rpm switch to activate. It is brand new and I followed the instructions in the MEVI FAQ and I did search so don't flame me and didn't find anything that was horribly helpful. I am able to ground the solenoid out and it will open but the summit will not work. Right now it will not even light up the green LED. I am thinking that the switch may be bad. If you can think of anything that may be able to help me I would greatly appreciate it. PLEASE RESPOND SO I CAN GET THIS WORKING!!!!!!

I have been measuring the voltage of the white/green wire out of the ECU and it has about 6V even when I rev. Is it supposed to be this way? Is there anything else I can test?

ok, where did you get your rpm signal from and what do you have your switch set at it should be set at 3200-3400 because you have to remember that it is made for a V-8
also another important thing is that a common mistake is that the summit rpm switch does not have a per coil signal so you have to get the signal else where, so let me know and i will help you out the best I can

power and ground connected to cigarette lighter, white to white/green (has silver rings on it but matches with the ecu pin diagram) wire from ecu, and yellow to ground on solenoid. Positive on solenoid is tapped into power from rpm switch

Does the tach work though volts? I measured ~6 volts on the wire. I am going to bring it to a local shop that does a lot of import work, engine swaps, etc. If they can't do it then I am going to try another rpm switch.

Check your wiring again. Or play with that small screw on the board of the switch. Also, try connecting the solenoid to the battery, not too much of a difference, but with MEVI's you never know. What brand solenoid you have?

I bet it is just finding a setting on th switch that works. I know I have to use 3200 for a 5400 activation, but some other guys actually use 5400 for a 5400 activation....makes no logical sense that but that is what some have said.

It is either that or you're not taped into the right wire on the ECU.

Right now it is at 2000 just so I can get it to work. I have the AC Delco or GM solenoid.
What does the small screw thing do?

I think your best bet is to mess with different settings on the Summit.

I don't want to be a post ***** but i'm having a similar problem. What happens when the red and green light from the rpm switch is on all the time?

BTW i hooked up the yellow wire to the TAM screw not through the ecu.

I had it wired up wrong. I ended up blowing the RPM switch. You have to be careful. Make sure you have it to the Ground on the solenoid. I bought a Summit but blew it being miswired and bought a MSD that my friend had lying around. Works great now.

Yeah, I got the yellow hooked up to the ground side, I think either my rpm wire isng properly hooked up (white/green wire) or i need mess with that adjustment screw.

being that i am gonna do this within the next week or two, i just wanna see if i have everything right.

SUMMIT RACING RPM SWITCH (www.summitracing.com)part # sum-830449
1.red/pos goes to cigarette lighter positive

2.blk/neg goes to cigarette lighter negative

3.white wire runs to the rpm screw behind the tachometer (A.K.A GUAGES) make sure that wire reading behind the tach doesn't read more than 2 amps or you have to get a relay from radio shack or else where. most people choose the 30 amp relay.

4.yellow runs to the vacuum solenoid's negative wire in the engine bay

5.gray is either not used if yellow is used or if gray is used then yellow would not be, and the gray would just hook up like the yellow wire 0n step #4.

AC DELCO SOLENIOD (www.gmpartsdirect.com)part # 1997152
1.positive crimped wire to the battery positve

2.negative crimped wire runs to the either yellow wire or gray wire whichever one you used on the rpm switch.

now the hoses from the canister i'll have to get back too yall on that.

I know for me that after I hooked up everything I had to set my RPM activation to half of what I wanted. So if I want it to activate at 5200 I have to set it at 2600. For 5400 I'd use 2700 and so on.

DIDN'T WANT TO START A NEW THREAD ON THIS Q, BUT I AM DOING THE MEVI INSTALL THIS SATURDAY . THE QUESTION IS WILL I BE ABLE TO DRIVE NORMALLY WITH THE MEVI MANIFOLD ON AND NOT HOOKING UP THE INSTALL KIT? THE THING IS MY DAD WILL ATTEMPT THIS AT HIS SHOP AND IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG WITH THE INSTALL KIT LETS JUST SAY RPM SWITCH BREAKS OR SUMPTHING AND I NEED ANOTHER WEEK BEFORE ANOTHER ATTEPMT. CAN MY CAR RUN ALRIGHT ON JUST THE MEVI MANIFOLD OR SHOULD I PUT THE STOCK BACK ON ? I THINK I CAN JUST BY READING ABOUT PEOPLES RPM SWICTHES NOT WORKING OR HOOKING IT UP WRONG BUT I JUS WANT A POSITIVE ANWSER BEFORE ATTEPTING. THANKS TO ANY AND ALL.

Please don't type in caps, it is hard to read

As long as you have the manifold installed correctly, ie; just like the stock manifold, the car will run fine. You do not need the varibale function of the manifold working. The butterfly vavles just won't open, but the car will run fine like that.

It will just be slow if the valves don't open but it will drive fine.

http://forums.maxima.org/showpost.ph...32&postcount=3

Just check the rpm switch with a light bulb or something and double check the wiring.

yo yo yo

hey, did you get that gm solenoid to work? Because I bought a GM solenoid for my MEVI install, and when I installed everything, I found ou tthat the solenoid that I bought was normally open!!!! what we need for this is a normally closed solenoid. Was yours normally closed?

I was going to ask the same question. I want to install mine as well, but was worried that if I couldn't get the electrical right at first, I would still have a drivable car. I figured, that w/o the butterfly valves opening, the car would be starving for air.

Just curious, do you mean slower than stock, or you just won't benefit for the time being?

Again, an MEVI installed w/o working butterfly valve is fine. The car will run fine, no problems. But it will be slower in every aspect than just having the stock manifold on.

I had the same issue. It would stay open, and close when it recieved the RPM signal.
What I did to get it to work, is on the VSS, it has three outlets, two on one side and one on the other.
The side that has two, has a foam fliter attached to one of its outlets.
I removed that foam so that it was just an exposed outlet and used that to go to the MEVI, and the other to the cannister.
The single outlet on the other side I left open and used that as the release.

When I initialy set it up, I had the post with the foam filter running as the release, I figured that was how it was supposed to be setup since it had the foam filter on it.

AMAZING!! you guys are great. I am at work right now, but am gonna try it out at lunch. I went through HELL trying to find a way to short power to the solenoid when the rpm switch closed the circuit, but with no luck. I was about to buy a new solenoid that was normally closed. I can't beleive I didn't think of this on my own...WAY TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX! ha ha ha. I'll post after lunch to say if it is working or not.

It works beautifully now! I don't have the rpm switch hooked up right now, but I know it works fine, I tested it yesterday. But, with the vent line coming from the vacuum canister and the other line on that side going to the actuator, and the single inlet on the other side covered by the foam piece, with power the valves open in the blink of an eye, and slam closed as soon as power is taken from the solenoid. Thanks again, for the advice.

question about the AC Delco solenoid. How do you connect the wires to the solenoid. It has a weird connection piece. Also. I cant find the gasket that goes between the manifold and the manifold cover. I dont think it was shipped. Where can i find one. My dad said something about some gasket sealant stuff i could get and you apply it then it turns into a homemade gasket. Thanks all

i just some connectors that you find in the help section of the auto store. they have little holes on one side that side on the the ac delco pins.and you can crimp a wire on the other side..i had my summit rpm switch set at 5200...

5200 is best when i dynoed today i found this to be the most optimal for seamless engagement.

Im using the TAM screw behind the dash as a tach signal is that good? I must have wired something up really wrong because my summit has both led light. Im also using a relay because it was wired up to my harlan one. Im guessing I need the other solenoid? What a pain in the *** this **** is. Everyone has everything wired to diff things. Everything for me is wired in my engine bay.

If both LED's are on that means it's open all th time, or you have it set @ a really low RPM.

mine's at 5000 rpms. seems to notice a "power dip" when the valve opens, but after that, it's really nice from there on. nice pull all the way to redline.

This is what i did,

Red-- power (relay)
Black-- to ground (relay)
White-- to tach
Yellow-- to ground (im sure I messed up here)
Solenoid black is to engine ground
solenoid red is to relay 12v
led light is red to battery
black right now I have it on tach wire which makes the thing stay on all the time.

Someone correct me now.

First of all, if your using a Summit Switch ditch the relay.
Red-- power
Black-- to ground
White-- to tach
Yellow-- to ground on the VSS
VSS positve-- to 12v

Looks like you messed up with the VSS.

The relay is only needed for the Harlan switch. Using the TAM screw works perfectly on the Summit Switch.

You 99 guys will have to test out where your RPM signal runs from on the back of the guage pod if you want to set it up this way. The idiots at Nissan didn't mark a TAM screw on your pods.
