buying new max, need some advice- UPDATE-

Ok so i have an S14 240sx, love it. I love nissans... bla bla
this is my first post, I have been reading a ton over the last 2 weeks here. So Im finally ready to buy myself a max.

Ive been looking for $5-6k range, 95+ SE, 5sp.
So I found one today and checked it out. The following is the condition and Id just like to get some feedback to see what you all think value wise.

She is the prigianal owner and has tons over servicerecords all up to date. She says that 1st gear syncro was bad, so she got the tranny rebuilt and a new clutch (few months ago). New condensor and lines (not sure why), but when I turn on the a/c its really loud (im assuming the compressor). The motor is crisp and runs great with 116k on it. Very smooth and pulls pretty nice threwout 1-3rd gears. The shifter feels a little loose and when in neutral it was hard to find 3rd gear cause the shifter had no distinctive "center" if you will. So if would kinda flop around and you had to find 3rd. However it went into all the gears ok and teh clutch felt good.
Mechanically the car looked pretty good and felt good. I saw no leaks (no axle/tranny leaks), no PS rack leaks or anything, no oil pan none of it; which i was pleased about. brakes are solid.

96 SE, 5sp 118k, no bose, no leather, spoiler needs repaint and front and rear bumpers will need repaint cause they are scuffed up. There is a small pullable dent in the rear pass. door and thats the ONLY thing wrong with the body. The interior is really clean and all power everytign works (sun roof, seat, windows, locks, steering...etc)

Only things that make me feel weird about it are the repaints needed (prolly not much, but still) the compressor making noise and the shifter feeling pretty sloppy (however the gears and clutch feel nice). Other than that, its a pretty nice example of an SE I suppose.

She is asking $5700 obo for it, I went to KBB and put one in excellent shape it came to about $5250 or something. So what do you all think that the car might be worth?

PS- this thing has nasty torque steer in 1st gear, is this common with 5sp max's? Thanks a bunch for any input,

Austin

You could get a 97 or newer for that kind of price, with fully loaded. Keep looking.

The loose shifter can be easily fixed if you install a new shift bushing at the shift linkage.

It'll stiffen it right up.

I'd prolly give no more than $4500 for it

I agree it seems a little high for something that may needs some repairs. I don't know a lot about working on Maximas but I do know a lot about shopping for them. I have two and I shopped for six months before I got mine. I do know that if your patient you can find some good deals from people who don't know what they have or just want a dif. car. Be patient and you'll find the right buy.

I just got my 1997 max like 3 weeks ago for $4000 its a 5 speed SE 91K miles every single option, bose, leather, auto climate control, dual power heated seats, and sunroof and runs great and I took it to my mechanic and looked at it with him. All it needs is breaks and muffler. It did take me about 10 months to find the max I wanted so good luck and I would say keep looking because that women wants to much

Like I said in my edit it took my a long time to find the one I wanted, but I am happy I waited the inside was spotless and the outside for that matter, it had custom made seat covers on it most of its life. I don't think I could ever find that good of a deal again.

ya, ****... I am carless right now so I raelly need to get a car relatively soon and I really want a max. There are so few 5-speeds around here (prolly everywhere to). I guess maybe I can hold off for another few weeks... i may just have to get an auto or get something else.

I wish i could find deals like those!

That Max that you're looking at is nowhere near Excellent shape.

If that woman tried trading the 95 SE Max with 118k into the dealership, she was prolly offered around $2500. Avg. black book on it is $4325. Rough is $2500. Haven't actually seen this Max, but I'd say its much closer to Rough than Average (118k miles is alot of miles for a dealership).

$5700 is WAY too much for it. If a dealer offered her $2500 for it, I'd think somewhere around $3500 is the right number. BTW, how are the tires and brakes?

The AC was loud on mine, bought it in Aug, well, it seized up a week ago and
snapped the belt so I had no alternator charging the battery, drove like 40 miles to get home.Good batt. The AC compressor cost me $700 at a dealership.

Cool, thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I think Ill call her up and offer like $4500 and see what she says. I definetly wont go any higher. The brakes and tires are both very good, the only real problems are those that i mentioned. Bad things are the repaints needed and the compressor...

Thanks again though, its just tough as hell to find a decent max around here. Ive been looking for about 3 weeks with basically no luck. Anyone selling a 5sp near Arizona?

Ok guys, another one just got posted today!!!

This guy said that it really has no options, no keyless, no bose, no leather... but it runs awesome. It has a couple scuffs on the bumper and needs new front tires. But "everything" else is good. I looked up KBB on it and it was about $8,000 for it and he is askin $6,750 obo for a 98 5sp SE...

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...or=&cardist=22

What do you guys think? I am going to go look at it in about 4 hours so I want toget some quick feedback!!! Thanks!

Austin

you mean avg blue book is in $4k and black book is $2400 avg. Blk book is dealer book updated on monthly basis reflecting sale prices at auctions.

I'd go check that one out and see what condition it's in. Personally I would pay around $6500 for that if everything checks out. It's got low mileage! And if it were in cali, I'd prolly buy it myself.

that 96 is costing WAY too much like others have suggested, and its below avg condition, id offer $4000. i paid $3900 for a 95 se 5speed with EVERY option offered that year with 120k miles on it, almost immaculate condition wiht exception to a ding on the rear door. go with the 98, it wont hve the killer differential bearing problems that happened to be on 95-97 models. good luck with the car, check out the 4sale section, thers alot of good deals in there as well.
