have you done/checked the usual that would cause bad fuel economy?
air filter
TB
IACV
tire pressure? (if you low on tire pressure that could be a killer)
check for codes,
plus if your just heavy on the gas from light to light you will burn much more gas.

see if your o2 sensors are within spec, might be dying and not throwing a code, recheck that Knock sensor to see if its functional all the time. try cleaning the TB, change your air filter. what plugs are you using? do a tuneup if yo havent done so. and run some seafoam of BG through the gas tank and brakebooster.
lastly your injectors might b efaulty.

The owners manual is kinda funny on this. It recommends using 91 but says you can use 87 on one page. On another page it says 87 and even as low as 85. My car runs fine for me on 87, I'm not spending a dime more for fuel.

Dude, 92 octaine MINIMUM. Running less impacts the engine compartment, and components. You'll have to replace major engine components in a few years if you keep it up.

I was getting about 15miles to the gallon on a bad O2 sensor, got my an oil changed (full service) not sure what they do but now I'm getting 18 to the gallon, as soon as I replace my sensor I should see better mileage
New York City driving cant be compared to other peoples mileage when they are in different states, even highway driving in New York is like city driving, stop and go. the majority of people ive seen saying they get 25 mpg are people who live in Florida and Utah and places like that where everything is highway... the majority of people i have seen getting like 17-20 mpg are people who live in the big cities... i have the same issue. i was getting around 13-14 mpg but i also was getting codes for knock sensor and 1 of my 02 sensors.. i changed my front 2 oxygen sensors last week and i have gotten better gas mileage but it still sucks.. only around 16-17mpg. i still have to change my knock sensor next week so hopefully that will make it somewhat better..

1st of all, No you wont. 87 wont hurt anything, It will just cause the timing to be retarded and hence the car wont perform as well as it would with 91+ octane. The ECU goes into a "safe mode" to prevent engine knock.
2nd of all, where did you get this '92 octane minumim' from? Some places around the country only sells 91 octane (Cali), and it's recommended that you put in premium, not required. I fill up with premium every time, but if you're spending most the time on the highway, 87 / 89 wont hurt the car at all, and it will save you a little money.

Save you money in the short run, doesn't anything less than 91 burn faster so you need to refuel sooner than if you put a higher octane?
You don't know what your talking about if you think 87 octane is going to hurt this engine. You are the one wasting money at the pumps every week. I have been running my car for 3 years, 60K miles, no issues on 87 octane, almost all high speed highway, the thing run great and screems..............
