Y-pipe with stock exhaust

Do a lot of people on here have a Y-pipe w/ stock exhaust combo? Do I still get the advertised gains with my stock exhaust system?

Is it recommended to replace the other stuff under there and an aftermarket muffler to get the most benefit from it? I was thinking to keep everything else stock except the Y-pipe, but first I want to see what you all think.

Thanks,
Dan

Most benefit comes from the y-pipe, so yes, a large number of people only change this.

Everything else is a question of exhaust note.

Changing everything else (muffler, b-pipe, hi-flow cat, 2.5" mandrel bends) combined would yield maybe ~5-7hp. Include some sort of intake, maybe an extra ~3hp.

I think i would keep my stock muffler if i had to do it all over again. Save the extra money for an intake or light rims or something thats more useful than noise.

Although my car does sound pretty cool with just a Y-pipe/muffler

Alright cool.. cause my friend is like "you know dan, your y-pipe is basically useless without getting exhaust." And I couldn't 100% defend myself. This is from my VR6 buddy who has an eBay "electric supercharger" (plastic hairdryer) which he thinks gives him 30-50HP.

that is false, you still get power from it... you would get more with an intake...

i disagree on the cat, dont waste your money...

id really recommend a b-pipe!!! you get some power out of that...

you can keep your stock muffler to be sleeper like people do, or get an aftermarket one, they just make more noise... make sure to get a resonated b-pipe to refine the sound...

do the y pipe and have a muffler shop custom make u a b pipe you will still feel the power and it isnt that expensive. plus you keep the car quiet and its still a sleeper. but replacing the muffler and cat is just for sound in my opinion its not worth it if you just want the gains.....but i wanted looks and sound so i got a full catback

I hear you. Just before I did the I/Y/B, my cousin did a full exhaust upgrade on his Mazda 626. (Headers, High-Flow Cat, Cat-back) . It doesn't surprise me that a non-Maxima owner is skeptical of your gains. What I learned is that gains are not universal when compared component-by-component. Instead, more logically, it is dependent on the design of your car's unique system. For example, my cousin will get a proportionally higher performance gain by doing just the exhaust manifolds (collectors). Where our OEMs are designed reasonably well, on the 626 it's awful and incredibly inefficient, much like the 2 pre-cats on the Y that they don't have. I told my mechanic friend who works strictly on Lambos and Ferraris that I was going to get the best gains doing the Y. He said I have to do the test-pipe since that makes the biggest difference for the cars he works on. He's not dumb, but he doesn't know that our cat's diameter is slightly larger than the OEM piping to begin with and only provide ~3whp. On his cars, emissions control kills those vehicles that were born for pure, unrestricted speed. You've done your research and you know your car the best.

Have confidence in the thousands of .orgers with dynos and track slips. You will get noticeable improvement.

Remember, everyone's gains will vary slightly, but here's a dyno breakdown of the mods you are considering that I think you will find useful:

http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/519

It starts here and then follow all the links until you find the B-Pipe analysis. Btw, the Budget Y is now polished SS.

i bought the stone racing y-pipe, it looks nice but i had to drill out the holes where it mates to the manifold and needed to give it a little shove to get them on, other than that they are nice, and i noticed power difference right away, worth every penny.... i have the stock exhaust after that but im prob going to up grade to a custom one soon. gonna try and get some dyno time to see what gains it gave me... just the intake gave me approx 10hp and 10tq so i wonder what this does..
