Help

Hey guys question. Why is it that when I am at a stand still (while in drive) the car hesitates when I hit the gas? It does the same thing in reverse. I checked the air filter and it is ok and is fairly new. I check the plugs around the filter to. Could it be because I dont have that much gas in it? It seams as it lags for a second or more... Any help??????
