H&R springs with stock shocks

H&R springs with stock shocks

does anyone have H&R's with stock shocks nedd to know how it rides,i would get shocks but i just bought a y-pipe catback and cai and the funds are a little low i also put cheap coilovers on my car that made it drive terribley so anything would make it drive better need some advice from someone with them on with stock shocks

As a temporary until you get new struts, you'd be OK. However, it won't take long to blow your stock struts after putting in lowering springs.

Besides, it'll handle like sh*t anyway ... pick up some new struts I have some for sale if you're interesed, hehehehehe (sorry to jack your thread).

I put H&R's into my previous '98, left the stock shocks. The ride was great, looked good. The rear shocks started to leak and replaced them, actually sold the car 30K miles later, never had a problem with front struts.

My recommendation, depending on mileage, its your risk of blowing the shocks. Then you have to pay to have it done all over again. Or spend a little more now and never have to worry about it again.

I've had H&R's on my 98 with stock struts (about 90k on them) for about a month with no problems yet. It rides fine....at least better than it used to stock. I'm sure new struts would just improve the ride but like many I didn't have the money to do both at once. The job is a pretty easy DIY, ( took about 4 hours for my first time) just follow any of the multiple writeups found on the net. When my stock struts blow I'll gladly shell out the cash and replace them with GR2's or AGX's.

Do not get AGX's if you want a comfortable ride. If that is your goal get the Illuminas. If I could do it all over again, the Illuminas would be on my car.

I wouldn't put springs on if you're only going to put shocks on at a later time unless you're doing the install yourself. You'll only wind up paying for the install twice which is a slap in the nuts.

Conrad, ok you're probably right,is there an easy way to tell if they are blown? I can push on each corner and I get plenty of bounce....I thought that was good.

I have the H&R's with Tokicos in the front and KYB GR2's in the back.... best ride ever. Tokicos are the softest strut/shock, but with lowering, people had said that the tokicos tend to blow easily (like stock), so I decided to put on the GR2's, and the ride is very close to stock. My other Maxima has Maxspeed springs with GR2's all around and it is much harsher than the H&R/Tokico/GR2 setup.

Oh and definitely wait until you have both the springs and struts. The stock struts will go out, then you will have to pay for installation twice.

Think about it this way, your stock struts were designed with a specific ride height in mind. If you lower your car, you are shortening the stroke on your strut. Basically, the strut will start in a compressed state even before it has to soak up any bumps - so, you never get the initial compression from your strut since the compression stroke has already been started by virtue of the lower ride height.

Seriously, do yourself a favor and wait until you get struts that match up well with the springs you have.

I also agree that the maxspeed springs are a very hard ride, but it's a progressive rate spring that's intended for better performance, not ride quality. If you're rockin' anything less than a 45mm sidewall tire, stiff springs are not for you - one pot hole and your wheels are toast

I have done some research and found that adjustabe coilovers are the best way to go. all in one, great ride, and you have the ability to raise or lower your car easily.

uh... no. im riding on H&R sports with stock struts. ride is slightly stiffer - not bumpier - than stock. and ive been on this setup for over 2 yrs now (at least 30K miles). my car is now at around 130K miles, on the original struts, with lowering springs, and no problems. stop trying to ***** out your struts.
