Need help w/ 0407 crankshaft position sensor code (ref)...

According to the haynes manual, the ref sensor should Ohm out to 470-570 ohms when measuring resistance across the two terminals. Mine is at 530ish so the sensor is apparently good.

I've verified that the ground for the reference sensor is good.

The haynes manual says that if the readings on the resistance are good, check the ground and I did. It also says to refer to the wiring diagrams and check the wiring harness for an open circuit to the PCM or a damaged harness. What's the PCM, the ECU? I can't really test continuity on the white wire going to the ECU since my mulitmeter test leads are not long enough. I want to verify that the white power wire is good but I can't find any specs on what the readings should be. 12V with ignition on? 5V? Right now it's reading like .1V.

Any other ideas on what's up?

I've taken off the position sensor and cleaned off all the metal shavings (there are 2 crankshaft position sensors, a reference and a position...0407 is for the reference one). Someone said that this was their problem with my symptoms and ECU code. It was covered with shavings but it only helped my problem for a week. Now the car won't start at all again and I checked and no more shavings so that isn't it.

Any help is greatly appreciated. This is my Daily Driver (that won't start) and my lude isn't setup for daily driving...

i had the same problem when i changed to a certain (rvm) underdrive pulley. it did not have the timing teeth of the right metal. have you changed to an UDP or is your stock? if push comes to shove, i would try to find someone w/another maxima, swap sensors, and see if that's your problem. better to test it out than to buy from nissan w/o being sure because they don't usually take returns on electrical items.

Car is completely stock (atleast best I know/can tell). How do you check the timing on this thing? How do I set it?

I think autozone has this sensor. I might just sink the 65-75 into one just to try. If it doesn't help, I can remove it right away and return it. Only I don't think it's the sensor itself.

Anyone know what the reading (volts or whatever) of the white wire should be?

you know there are 2 sensors right? the "front" sensor is the one right below the oil filter on the passenger side of the car. the "rear" sensor is actually on the front of the engine, right behind the radiator on the seam where the engine and transmission bell housing meet. i believe the 0407 code does not distinguish between front and rear sensors.

I know there are two and according to this link, the code does distinguish between the two...

04 07 is for the reference sensor (next to the oil filter)

09 05 is for the position sensor (on front of engine)

Forgot the link.

Anyone have any info on how else to test the sensors or anything that will fix this? Right now my Max is a big 'ole paper weight!
