Why did my Maxima do this?

I have a '99 SE limited 5 speed. I was going out to eat with my girl, I started the car up and closed the doors to check the air in the tires (I don't drive it much). She just kinda stood there and talked with me, I was wondering why she didn't enter the car. I found out why...........a second or two after I closed the car door the doors automatically locked. So here I am with my Max running and I'm locked out. Fortunately breaking in was alot easier than I thought it would be. So why did it do this?? I tried to duplicate it, with me IN the car. I didn't hit the lock button when leaving the car btw. Any ideas?? Heck I'm afraid to warm the car up now, kinda annoying. I know, I know get another key.

that is strange, it wouldnt lock on its own unless something is faulty. well when you warm up your car (depending on your neighborhood) wind down your window a little bit just in case, or like you said just get another key its like $0.98 at walmart for a copy.

I know if they key is in and on the on position but not started and you try to lock the doors it wont.

Oh, didnt know you could open the door without the computer chip in it... If you can, then that sounds like a reasonable idea.

I was able to reproduce your problem. If at any time you manually lock the door from inside, all the doors lock. So what I did, was 1/2 flip the inside lock. Then shut the door, which jiggled the lock the rest of the way. This in turn locks all the doors.

I fooled around some more, and was able to unlock the door with key, but only turn the key part way (about 1/16th turn, instead of 1/8th). I opened the door, then shut it again. Same deal.

But when operating the locks properly, I've never experienced this. Only when I'm fooling with it.

I know my brothers 01 max locks itself. I think you can set it to do this ( not saying this is why this happened) by turning the key back and forth a certain # of times .... posibly by pushing the remote button a certain way or holding it down , im not sure . I assume you guys know you can roll your windows down with the remote

I believe I've got a short in the passenger side front door. My max frequently locks itself, even while I'm driving. If I unlock the car by remote, and my wife opens the passenger side door first, it causes all the others to lock. Also, when the locks happen automatically, the passenger front door stays unlocked. One other issue, the speaker in the passenger door will cut in and out over rough bumps. I can bring it back by cranking the volume on the stereo, and then lowering it back down again. I think I need to take the door apart and check all the wiring. I believe the problem is at the door/frame trasition. Just haven't had time to look at it yet.

I was having this same problem and kind of figured out what MAYBE causing the doors to lock automatically. It's kind of hard to explain..so hear it goes. When the door is open, locate the button looking *** directly below the seat adjustment levers. (it's located in the door frame) This "button" has a rubber housing/cover. Whenever you push (or close the door) on this, the door lights turn off and tells the ECu your doors are closed. I noticed my driver and front passenger doors both has broken rubber housings so one day I went to the local junkyard and replaced them...I'm guessing broken rubber covering the button may send faulty information to the ECU, making it think the door is open or close... Somehow this has rid me of automatic door locking. Those with the same problem may want to try this.
