What is this part exactly for?

Just bought my 1996 Maxima " dont know the trim yet " this past saturday. I'm at the car lot and I notice this big black piece of "plastic" coming from the air filter to the front of the car. Now my question is do I connect this back to my air filter and to the front of the car or is it a unneccessary item to have? Sorry for the newbie question its just that it keeps coming apart cause its not connected the right way so I'm deciding either to kick it or leave it. Any help would be great thanks.

its the air scoop, it donest have to be attached, but itll growl a little, and the air will be coming in from the cabin, mine comes loose too, it grows a little like an intake. nothing noticeable, but no harm will be done. itll drive smoother though if its in place.

take some time out to familiarize yourself with the FAQ's, its on the stickies (the links in read) itll help you wiht ALOT of things
