Lookin to sell the auto and buy a 5spd.....but a few questions first...
I am almost at the point of selling my 95 auto max and getting a 5spd max.......but then i keep hearing about this nightmare problem over here about 5spd's>>> Differential Bearings. Well, my questions are 1) does every 4th Gen year have this problem? 2) Around what mileage does this problem occur at? 3)How much is the cost to fix this problem? Thanks....i tried searching and the stickies, but my answers were not found. Thanks again orgers

1 - I sadly believe most 4th gens have this, hopefully not everyone that came off the line will have this problem at some point
2 - This problem starts to occur around 90k, mine hit full at 100K and leaked oil onto my clutch ruining that too.
3) I'd say atleast $1,200 to fix (through a shop) if you did it yourself (a lot of work) would be much much cheaper as most of that price is for labor.
I'd suggest looking for what ever year, and if it happens to be a 96 lets say, try to drop the price an extra 1500 so that you can immediately get a new 2k tranny and clutch so you know you wont have any problems.
or if you find a good 98 in good condition you should be good.

mdeezy is right, pay cheap for your car, the engine will hold up, but youll run into tranny issues because of the diff bearing issue. i paid $3900 expecting a differential bearing problem, knock on wood, i still have the money set aside though.

Id say don't race. I notice some of the guys who report tranny issues are the guys who drive their cars hard. Im not saying all, but i've seen a few. If you have a 95-96, don't hit the track. Maybe that'll prevent the differential bearing issue.

My first '96 I-30t had some strange manual transmission issues, like the passenger side half-axle pulled out of the transmission while I was driving down the road (at about 120k miles). Before that, it had a very slow fluid leak from that side for a long time. I just had them put it back together, then the car was totalled a few months later. (Not my fault!)
My second '96 I-30t has 150k miles, a manual transmission, a previous owner that ran it in road rallies, and it still has the original clutch and no problems. The previous owner put in Redline synthetic early on, so maybe that helped? I still love driving this car.

My 98 I30T started dripping tranny fluid (about a quarter size spot each night), around 68K. I was taking it for the alternator recall and happened to mention it to the tech. He knew what was up and luckily, the car was still under warranty so it cost me $0.00.
Good luck.
Good luck.
