Anyone ever feel their Max is a gas guzzler?

From reading the other "How many miles/tank do you get?" threads, I feel somewhat lucky getting 23 mpg on average. However, using the Max as a commuter is starting to become costly. I'm thinking about getting a beater civic or something for the commute but then it makes me feel like I have the Max for nothing since I am commuting almost everyday. I can't be the only going through this...how do you get over it?
Just needed to gripe. Thanks for reading.

Nope. I'm beating my boring @$$ old 1992 AWD corolla by 5mpg and having much more fun with it.

I avg 25mpg mixed city/highway so I am generally happy. I wish I could get that combined number closer to 30 but I think that's impossible with our cars.

Same problem here.

Yup i'd be happy to get 25mpg from mostly highway driving but i'm getting in the 20-low 20s maximum.

Possible things are tune-up, change spark plugs etc...

I'm also gonna change my Electronic Temperature Control Sensor also. That might be affecting gas mileage. I'll let you all know how that goes.

Viktor.

They need a stickie on this!!!

My Max is a gas guzzler comparing to my little Honda 4 banger,
But it is a gas saver comparing to my F-250.
So for me it is relative.

Ok, say you spend $2500 on a beater Civic. At $2.15 per gallon, that's the same cost as 1163 gallons of gas.

If the Civic gets 30mpg compared to 23mpg from your Max, you'll have to drive it 8141miles that you would have otherwise driven in the Max before it pays for itself (that's not including maintenance and insurance for the Civic either).

Say your commute is 20 miles round trip, 5 days per week, that's 407 workdays (85 weeks assuming some holiday and vacation time in there where you drive the Max instead).

Still worth it?

When I was looking for a 3rd vehicle as a commuter I cranked some estimated numbers:

I considered getting another Max or getting a small integra.
I thought about getting a VW TDI but those with similar condition would cost more to buy used, a hybrid would be new which is too expensive. I thought about an Echo but they look silly.
I drive roughly an hour to work, the following are the rough amount I would spend on fuel annually for each vehicle (All in $CAN) if I use it as the commuter:

F-250 V8: $6000 (Regular gas)
Max V6: $ 2500 (needs Preminum gas)
Acura 1.8: $1500 (Regular gas)

I own all those now so I drive the 4-banger to work. I am hoping that a few years down the road the gas money I save would contribute to the next vehicle.

not unless you race.

1 min at high rpm will chug gas

do that a few times and you gas is all gone.

High rpms kill gas so much.

My 5-speed pulls between 360 and 420 under a city/highway mix, but I've touched 470 before on all highway.

Well I know this may sound stupid but I put that vornado in my intake just to see if i save on gas. It was given to me for free so I said why not give it a chance. I felt no gains btw or loss power felt the same. But I do get 50-75 more miles per tank scince i put it in. Then I took it out to see if i still got the extra mileage. Sure enough I lost that 50-75 mile extra per tank. You can try that out.

Wow Bubba. You actually tried it

I just got 21 mpg on my last tank. But it kinda sucks when you wake up drive to work which is a mile away and then park and come back eight hours later and drive one mile home. That doesn't help.

Keep your RPMs below 3K and it's not gonna be an issue. I do 30mpg on the highway and average 22-24 in the city.

Well, Now that I'm driving a 93 Chevy Truck with a 350 my max isn't such a gas guzzler. I can't wait to get back in the Max...I miss her so much.

I spend more gas while on idle before I go to work then on actualy driving to work
->less then a mile also. (well used too)
well to conclude the thread Number 09742865256345634563457430573409876th about gas consumption on our maximas, I would like to say.
take good care of your maxima and it will be a very economic car, but if you step on the gas then the maxima is a gas guzzler...., after all it is a V6.....
