Could it be that where your shifter pivots is loose. take off your shift boot and look down in there while you shift (note: you do not need to be driving to do this. you can do it with the engine off) and see if the pivoting mechinism is moving with respect to the chassis.

But if the shifter is loose you will not be able to completely engage into gear hence the grinding sound. Just check to be sure. it will take 2 minutes.

Mine just started making a horrible noise too about 4 or 5 days ago. Sounds just like what yours is doing. Tell me if yours does this. When I start the car (while the clutch is in) it sounds fine. As soon as I let out one the clutch while in neutral I start hearing a grinding noise. Sounds like metal on metal. If I move the shifter I sometimes hear a similar, but definately different grinding noise. It seems that it will go away once the car is warmed up. Once I start moving, you can hear the grinding noise increase as the cars RPM's increase. It is a truely horrible noise and I know that it is not good. I have tried to keep my driving down to a minimum until I can figure out what it is and fix it, but my Max is also my daily driver so I am somewhat forced to drive it. Oh yeah, one more thing. About a month or so ago I noticed that my car would make a sound that sounded like it was losing vacuum pressure. I couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from, but it seemed like it was somewhere around the PCV valve, only farther down in the engine bay. That noice would only occur once the car was warmed up also. And it kept a definate pattern, making the sound approx every 5-10 sec. I was going to take my car into a mechanic since I couldn't figure out what was causing this noise, but kept putting it off. Since this grinding noise has started, I do not think it is making the other noise. My car has always run perfectly and I have always kept very good care of her. But it has just recently had these two, possibly unrelated, events happen. If anyone knows what either of these two things could be, please let me know. I don't really want to pay someone to look at my car if one of you may know what is going on with it. mad-max98, let me know if you think we have the same problem. Maybe we can help each other out with what we find out.

ok guys here what exactly happened... 2 weeks ago i raced it pretty hard and i burned the clutch,,i kept on drivingthen a week later i started having problems shifting and it seemed like i lost pressure in the clutch line but then it went backto normal then had the same problem shortly after,, three days ago i started hearing whining noise and i thougt it was my brakes then it turned to slight grinding noise in first and 2nd and the car wouldn't go in 3rd then the slight grinding noise turned to a very loud noise and only then i started getting the noise when the car in neutral and the pedal is off the floor,,,i put the car on a lift and found out that my tranny was chipped and had a hole in it and no oil,, so i put the cold weld on it to try and find out if the tranny was ok after putting oil,,, but when i put the oilin the tranny it started leaking btween the the tranny and the engine where the flywheel and the clutch sit and i was told that was the main seal around the shaft in the tranny and the car was still making the noise so at that point i knew my tranny was gone so i started driving the car back to my place and i had to stop in some intersection and put it in 1st and i punched it when i saw some truck coming at me the car stumbled for a little bit then....................the noise was GONE UNBELIEVABLE i'm not sure what to do now

I have nothing nice to say about any of you. I'm almost shocked. Are you guys kidding me? Cold weld, Still leaking should I do anything about it, grinding noise as rpm's increase is a small problem?? This is to much for me

Yeah .... I never said that the grinding noise as the RPMs increase was a small problem. If you read what I said, I said

But, now that you mention it, you may be right. I took it to a mechanic today and he said that my input shaft berings were probably going bad (which is a big deal .... approx. $1000-$1500 to fix), but he said that I should just drive it until it gets really bad because it won't hurt anything else as it gets worse. He may have been wrong, but that's what the Nissan/Infiniti mechanic that I take my car to said. He said that I would definately need to get it fixed, but wasn't urgent (until it completely goes out, rendering my car undrivable). As far as the vaccuum pressure issue - he thought my cruise control throttle cable was too tight, causing the electronic switch in the throttle body to see it slightly open and think that it was time to accelerate, but there was no gas, so RPM's would just drop momentarily. If anyone has opinions about what my mechanic said, please reply. I am sure some of you out there in Maxima.org land have had to replace input shaft berrings in a transmission and know if he is right or wrong. I always welcome advice/information.

its your tranny.

Same happened to me and I would hear the terrible sound, turn out a ball bearing was loose around the input shaft as well a metal shavings, needless to say a new tranny was needed.

if you hear the noise with clutch in, but speed is the same and you dont hear the noise... its your tranny.

get it checked out, especially if you leaking oil thru the tranny, that will soak and ruin your clutch, slipping will be following soon.

Might want to give the throw out bearing a closer look to see if its doing its job. If thats working correctly then you blew out gears in the tranny.
