Auto Transmission Diagnosis

Hi, there

I noticed some probelms going on with my 97 maxima gxe auto transmission 99,000miles, hope you can give me some advice:

1. Sometimes, the car will not start it until I move the craft shift for a while;

2. Somethimes, it is really hard for me to move the shift from the parking to reverse position during the first start;

3. I can feel the slight slags during the acceleration, at about 20 and 40 or so.

Are these problems predictions of coming failure of AT? Do I need to take them seriously and do something?

Your advice will be greatly appreciated!

1 and 2 sound like the same problem.. your shifter cable. It happens to me all the time, when I go to start the car, it wont even click so I have to move the shifter all the way down to L and back up to P and it will start... sometimes when I turn the car off my key wont come out for the same reason....

Your shifter is hard to take out of P because of the shifter cable as well.. it gets caught up and its hard to get into gear.. its no biggie either. Happens to me quite often. The solution to this is when you park your car, put your car into Park while holding the brake, then immediately put your parking brake on. Why? because if you dont, as soon as you put your car into park and take your foot off the brake, the car will move forward an inch or 2 before it "catches" itself... and thats the reason your cable gets stuck. The transmission moves in Park when it knows its not supposed to..

As for 3... you have the good old Maxima auto transmission lag... perfectly normal as well.

Thanks a lot for your explanation.Now I'm a little relaxed. By the way, is it expensive for fixing the shifter cable?

No not at all, you can actually do it yourself. Open up your console where the cupholders are at and see if you can reach down there and look at it... you can spray some WD 40 on it and see if it lubes it up a bit.. or follow it front underneath the car...

I havent done it yet so I cant go into detail, laziness owns me
