i've got a 96 maxima, and the check engine is now on... local garage said it is from an error code having something to do with loose or faulty gas cap or a bad charcol canister.... We have reset the engine light about 4 times and replaced the gas cap, however the light still comes on.. is this a common problem?? Also, I hit 110 the other day and engine reved down, is there a governor at that speed or something?? seems to run fine after...

Thanks

What model do you have? If its a GXE, don't worry it's the governor. I'm afraid I can't help with the CHECK ENGINE light. Mine's dosen't seem to be working right now.

The 'Check Engine Light indicates a problem with your engine or emmisions system, from something as 'small as a loose gas cap' to a cylinder misfire to a bad oxygen sensor.
To check the MIL(Check Engine light yourself): goto vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html , get the 'code' that comes out and interpret it here vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecudecoder.html. From there you can get a general idea of what may be wrong with your engine. As for the governor, the GXEs without the C&C package seem to have the 110 to 120 MPH limiter, the SEs and GLEs seem not to have them. The ONLY thing that you could do to get rid of it is to replace the ECU with another one from an SE, making sure to match transmission and emissions specifications. BTW, why would you want to go over 110?
