fuel gauge sending unit

Does anybody know if you can just change the part to make it so your low fuel light will work again. I have narrowed it down to that small cylinder thing on the bottom of the sending unit with 2 wires on it. What exactly is this part I would like to just solder another one on there since my wife found out the other night that the light no longer works when she ran out of gas. I guess if I have to I could spend $100 bucks or so and just get another sender just seeing if its repairable instead.

It's probably the bulb itself, not the system.

No, I already jumped that little cylinder out and the light came right on.
