Can you adjust your own alignment?

Just wondering

Mine is a little off, so I am just curious. I am already bringing it to the shop next week, but I just want to know.

It's possible, but a lot of time and trouble unless you are really dedicated. You need a level place and some special tools. You can buy the tools or make them yourself.

To get an idea of what's involved you might have a look here:

http://quadesl.com/miata_alignment.shtml

This is one of the nicest write-ups I've seen, though it is for a Miata, which has a much more sophisticated suspension than a Maxima with way more adjustability built-in to it. The Maxima only really gives you an adjustment for front toe-in, which is the easiest to do. Most everything else on the Maxima is set at the factory and won't change unless you have worn-out parts or have had an accident.

This is another write-up:

Yeah, they are only charging me $40 for the front end ... and since I am moving, I am not opting for the lifetime thing cause I'm not coming back here for anything after that. hahah

I just wanted to know if it was easy or hard ... but yeah, its not worth it, I am going to just pay the $40

Thanks for the info though

Front End Alignments On A Machine Can Put A Car In Spec By Up To A Hundreth Of An Inch. Something That No Tape Measure Or Human Eye Can Do. It Is Possible To Do Yourself But It Will Never Be As Good As An Experienced Technician Doing It On An Alignment Machine. Trust Me I Do Them.

I got one for $150 at firstone. I don't think they took the vin. I think they said it was $25 to transfer to a different car, but you might be able to slip it by them with two max's.
