car died, need alternator belt? hopefully

long story, bear with me, my brake and battery light came on yesterday while idriving. didn't know what was wrong, checked battery, nothing wrong that i could tell. then today, light still on when i started the car, was going to take the car to get a new battery to see if that was the problem, so just as i was picking up my friend on the way the car just dies on me, clock light and everything dims out, airbag lights start flashing, and car just dies. i was thinking it was the battery, but everything still works, lights, radio, remote, except car won't start.

so i had to ask a few passerbys to give me a jump, and thats when you see how friendly people really are, they said they can't boost it for me, their in a rush, blah blah blah, at least one lady just said no, instead of excuses. finally called a campus cop to jump start my car, good thing i didn't make it out of my college campus yet. so drove back to my dorm, me and my friend took a look under the hood and he finds that one of the belt is loose. dunno how to describe it, but there is a tear in one of the "teeths" and it must have came lose. i think its the alternator belt.

just after spending so much money i thought i would cut back this month and not spent another cent on my max except for gas, guess not. now im stuck, closest shop is over 4 miles (******* long island!) and i don't think i can make it there on my battery and i don't want to tow it either unless its my last option, tomorrow is last day of school and im about to go home for the holidays, and now im stuck. anyway, im just really pissed, spent so much money on the car lately and i was hoping i could cut back for a while and save up, now this happens. anyway, would the alternator belt be the main cause of all of this? do you guys think i can make it there on my battery if i have someone follow me to charge it along the way or should i just tow it. sorry to be a cheapo, but its the holidays and i have spent so much and i really don't want to squeeze two hundred? out of my wallet for towing it a few miles.

Your better off pushing it or finding someone to change the belt... I changed that belt in about 5 minutes from the top of the car... Find a mechanic or friend whos willing to change it, its very easy... and you dont have to drive your car anywhere.
