Optima.. but if your not looking for anything crazy...

There arent any real great brands as most batteries are recycled and used over again. What I would look for is CCA... the higher the better.

Optima's (dry cell) are ideal for boats or 4 wheel drives that bounce around a lot, total over kill for a car but hey if you have the cash to blow they look nice, but cost at least double. A friend of mine owns a battery shop so I'm going to trust what he says. Basically get the biggest physical and largest cold cranking amps you can get with the longest warranty for the cheapest price. The warranty usually is longer in relation to the larger CCA.
Glowlites have large CCA's, also Energizer (at Walmart) and cheap!

I have a system! and my battery still cost 60% less!
All I'm saying is if he is strapped for cash he doesn't have to feel he's got something inferior if he doesn't have an Optima, no question they are excellent battery's but they were never designed for street use per say, even though they are used for that

Optima Red Tops are good but expensive, Sears Die Hard Silver and Gold are more economical (and the Gold has the same warranty I believe).

Cant get any better than this

Once you get around 1000 cca, that's a lot of amps. But I also see you're in IL so those extra cca's will help on those dark winter nights. Even in such cold weather though, anything over 1000cca's is kind of overkill in my humble opinion.

Costco sells Optima Red Top batteries for $100. That's a very good price for a very good battery. I personally have a Yellow Top given to me by a friend.

If you have a system go with the red top.. for the money you cant go wrong.. if not I'd say a stock replacement like a Die Hard wouldnt be bad.

Consumer Reports had a writeup on car batteries recently (last month or two months ago). They gave top marks to the Diehard batteries as well as Autozone batteries. I was surprised about the Autozone recommendation, but hey, if they tested them, how can you argue? Otherwise we are just going by "recommendation" and "in my experience," etc. which doesn't mean much. I'm sure Optimas are good batteries, but they typicall cost $100-$120 - you can buy TWO Diehards or Autozones for $120.

BTW don't think that if you buy an Optima you'll never had a problem, mine had a leak between compartments or something like that causing it to bubble. Good thing I spotted it and time and got a free replacement.

I have had an Optima red top in my '94 rx7 for 8 years and it just died sometime over the past 3-4 weeks, guess that's what I get for not driving it for so long. I just bought a walmart battery for my grand cherokee a few months ago and for the price you can't go wrong! My battery in the maxima will probably be replaced by a walmart or autozone battery when the time comes.

FYI...Autozone doesnt make their own batteries... I dont know what type they are. They could be Exide, Interstate, etc.

How about Nissan Batteries??? My 97 seems to still have the original Nissan battery, that's 7 years going on 8, and she still cranks ok, unless it's really cold, then it cranks kinda slow. I might need a new one soon, it's getting cold lately around here so I'll be in the market for one in the near future. I've heard good things about the DieHards...

I been buying and having Interstate batteries (the top of the line $60-70) they usually last me about 5 years. Maybe if Optima red top go a little cheaper than $100 may get one when needed, the problem is that is smaller and shorter, so empty space around looks ugly.

Stinger, Optima, Exide ... They all make good batteries.

If you listen to your system while the car is NOT running then get a Stinger or Optima battery. If you don't listen to your system while the is not running than any battery will do.

Just make sure you get a maintenance free battery.

I just wanted to correct myself after re-reading this post. Consumer Reports gave top marks to Advanced Auto's batteries. I said Autozone, and was mistaken.

I would also comment that you don't need some huge battery with 1000 cold cranking amps. 800+ CCAs is required for diesel cars (I know, I've owned two of them), but these little gas powered v6 engines should fire right up in the cold weather. If they don't, then I strongly suggest everyone buy the less expensive batter and spend the money saved on a tuneup.

I'd get an AC Delco. They're OEM on GM vehicles and it seems to be the one thing that's actually good on their cars. They're solid throughout the winter and started up my Max yesterday in -30C (-42C) up here in Ottawa (That's Celcius not F btw).

dont believe in what CONSUMER REPORT says....the whole magazine and testing is based on donations and sponsorships....so basically whatever company pays more to have their products tested the better reviews they are obviously gonna have.....i just heard about this fact a coupel days ago

any anyways i own a Interstate battery.....had it for about 2 yrs now...works great...never had trouble starting it....even when its -30 below here in MN.....

i had a Diehard Gold before and that worked great too

The Delco in my wifes Honda Odyssey didn't even last 3 years, our Odyssey has power doors (+ AC blah blah), so there is constant demand on the battery, we went with a Energizer from Walmart, great price and 900 CCA, with a 3 year roadside assistance, 72 month warranty (pro rated) for $50US.
