Need some answers on transmission cooler. Since i am driving here in NYC 100% of the time, meaning a lot of "stop" and "go" therefore tranny will overheat. So basically if i install tranny cooler and was quoted by local tranny shop a price of $125.00 My question is it really necessary to preserve tranny for long term? My maxima is 1997 gle with 40k miles. Any side effects on this tranny cooler affecting maximas? Please tell me your opinions and experiences.

Thanks in advance!

$125!!! What a ripoff! Go down to pepboys or your local autoparts store and buy one for $35-40 +$5 for the extra hose. Install it yourself and save $$$. It was real easy and only takes an hour or two. Just my $.02 Good luck.

If i had a necessary tools and own driveway I would do it, but since i live in building and working on street is not for me, so basically i have to go to shop. price is okay with me, but the question is to be answered is: Is it as preventive meassure to preserve tranny? any negative side effects? your experience how your maxima behaved after installing AC for tranny?

You won't notice any difference in the way your a/t performs when you add a cooler. All you are doing is buying a little insurance against the cost of a $2K rebuild. IMHO, it is well worth the price.

I installed mine a few days ago. Very small price for a little piece of mind!

It's worth more than piece of mind in NY traffic, I know I live here. After sitting in bumper to bumper traffic for 1/2 hr. the tranny fluid gets so hot that it begins to thin thin out enough to feel the difference in torque converter slip and slower shifts (lower line pressure). The transmission feels much "crisper" under these conditions with a cooler. This was last week when the temp was only in the 60's. I also strongly advise having the fluid changed to synthetic ATF. This makes it easier on the trans when it's cold out, and it takes longer for the fluid to warm up with the cooler.
BTW: Mobil 1 is $4.99 in Autozone and $5.99 in Pep Boys.
Even at $200 with the fluid change it's a bargain in the long run.
