auto trans slippage help!
auto trans slippage help!
i have a 95 automatic maxima with 78k miles.
My tranny problems started with me losing 1st, 2nd, and reverse on one random short drive. Engine/Tranny was cold at the time. I took the car to AAMCO but right away knew they were trying to rip me. THey wanted to rebuild the tranny for 1790. I laughed in their face and got my keys back right away.
My mom knew a tranny guy so i took it to him. He said there is minor slipping (no, there is pretty bad slipping) and that he'd rebuild it for 1200 and back his work with a 6 month warranty. Fine, i say. (69,000)
I got the car back and I still was experiencing slipping and terrible responsiveness. I took it back to the guy and he said he noticed no problems.(74000) He said he'd look the trans over and make sure everything was ok. I got the car back with an even longer warranty (12mo) and with the SAME PROBLEM. At this point I decided to not bring the car back to him.
Yesterday I flushed the tranny with Mobil 1 ATF, dropped the pan and replaced the screen. Yes I cleaned the magnets and replaced the gasket/bolts. The tranny seems to shift better/smoother when it shifts correctly, but it still slips.
A description of the problem: If, at any time the tranny is shifting, and the throttle is ~50% applied at the same time, the RPMs will jump while the MPH stays the same, indicating a slipping transmission. The bigger gears (1,2) are not affected as much as the smaller gears (3,4 being the worst). Basically in order for the trans to operate the way it should I need to let up on the gas so the trans wont slip.
At this point, i'm wondering if the tranny solenoids are the culprits. The mechanic I sent it to mentioned premature wear in the trans itself, which is also evidence that the solenoids need to be pulled out and replaced.
What does every1 else think?

seems to me the guy used the cheapest parts to rebuild your transmission, I went to the guys at aamco, and my tranny runs like new, and I got a 12 month warranty...it's expensive, but the work they do is quality. With alot of shops, you get what you pay for.
you can isolate them by seeing if they throw CEL codes, I know before my rebuild, my tranny was throwing a few codes, and I thought it was the solenoids, but it was really the synchros and torque converter that were the culprit. The solenoids will show up as a (1-4)gear malfunction. Drive your car around for a bit on city and highway streets after clearing the ECU, then see what you come up with.
The decision to rebuild instead of swapping a 2k tranny (I will never buy a nissan automatic transmission again) was a financial matter, so in the end it was out of my scope.
Checked the ECU, 0505. Reset the ECU, took it for a 10 mile cruise, and still no trouble codes.
Any ideas??? This problem has been burdening me not only for a few weeks, but _several_ months. It's very annoying to not be able to drive fast in my car for that long.
