What is the difference?

My tranny just went out and I have being inquiring about a tranny from a junkyard and a few other places and I am being asked a few questions. The first one is what is the production date, does this really matter as I have read that 95-01 will swap fine? The second question is there a difference that would matter when getting a new tranny between locking/non-locking differential? Also anyone know of where I can find a reasonably priced manual between the dates of 95-01? Thanks in advance.

95-01 will fit, but they don't know that. I'm sure they will insist that the 00-01 will not fit your 5th gen. Just look on car-part.com and when you call just say the car is whatever you're calling about. It just makes it easier. locking/non-locking does matter. Locking would be nice, but it will probably cost more and you'd have to replace the axles.

The lucky canucks have VLSD, but the US versions shouldn't. There are instructions in the faqs someplace for finding out from either the VIN or the info plate on the firewall (I don't remember which) just to make sure.

Better traction...without it if one wheel loses traction it'll just keep spinning (and all the power goes to it)...with it both wheels break loose. I expect somebody else could give a better explanation.
