My friend has a 96 I30 with Auto trans.

The mechanic by mistake filled the auto transmission fluid twice as much. Now when he presses the gas pedal it stays in first gear and in order to move to the next gear he needs to let go of it and press it again. Also after they got the fluid it was black and kind of burned. Does anybody have any idea what's going on?

man, thant sucks...

i just changed my tranny oil and i dont see how you could fill it with 2x the amount, although the manual transmission refill process is probably different than the auto transmission. wait till daniel b. martin gets on, he'll solve everything. if anything does go wrong, i would think that the shop would pay for any problems you may come upon, i wouldnt bring it back to them to let them try and fix it though. good luck

Pray for your tranny. Sounds like the thing is fried to me. You should never drive your car with an overfilled tranny. You will destroy it.

I don't understand this sentence. Please elaborate.

In the future, when you initiate a thread on this forum, try to choose a more descriptive Subject line. For example, Automatic transmission overfilled conveys more information than Need Help!!!

This is the part I don't understand. Who is "they"? What fluid? Where did they get it from? This may be clear to you, but not to the reader.

I couldn't agree more. I tend to stay away from such postings because it reeks of some kid who did something stupid with his Maxima. For some unknown reason, I clicked on this message... glad to see Daniel B. stepped up to the plate.

This what happened.

My friend went to mobile for a transmission fluid change.
He drove to New Jersey and on the way back the car started to make those problems. He then went to Jiffy Lube and the mechanic over there took the fluid out and it was black instead of red. So now i am asking if you have any idea what did the overfill of the transmision did?

Sorry for the lack of info last time, i was in a hurry to someplace and i wrote it before i went out.

Thank you for the clarification.

Without a tear-down of the transmission it is impossible to know what damage was done. However, the important thing to focus on is the condition of the transmission right now.

There are several tests you can make with the fluid on the automatic transmission dipstick.

1) Level. It should be up to the full mark. If not, add as required.

2) Color. It should be bright red and translucent. A brown or black color is a sign of fluid degraded by excessive heat, and/or worn friction materials. A minty pink color is a sign of water contamination.

3) Odor. It should have a clean oily smell. A burned odor is a sign of fluid degraded by excessive heat.

4) Feel. Wipe the dipstick with your fingers and then rub your fingers together. It should be smooth and slippery. A "gritty" feeling is a sign of worn friction materials.

In an earlier post you described the transmission as reluctant to shift from 1 to 2. This could be caused by a variety of internal defects. It is also influenced by the adjustment of the Throttle Position Sensor. The TPS is an engine part, one which is easily accessed. Your friend might want to test and adjust the TPS.

When you press the gas it will go into first but won't pass to the second gear until you take your foot off it. Do you know anything about this kind of a problem?

Also what damage can an overfilled auto trasmission cause?
