Driving on the Lake ***Pics***

Well had some fun today, noticed the lake was a good 12"-20"+ thick, so it was safe to have some fun out there today. Got a friend of mine that had a Digital SLR camera that he uses for photography, this is what we go out of it (Took well over 200 pictures within 30 mins, these were the good ones):

Do remember, cardomain decreased the quality of these, until I get a good host for pictures, this is as good as it gets.

nice pics - no ice where i live - at least not thick enough to drive on.

btw - (i haven't been here in a while) Are your head lights HID conversions or is that a completely different projector-style headlight? srry for the noob question.

Peiced them together myself. Parts came out of a Mercedes E500, and my other set came out of a BMW Z4.

I wasn't scared. There were trucks out there weighing 1000lbs+ more than my car. Not to mention, we measure the ice 12" thick in the MIDDLE of the lake (deepest point), which means areas around the shore are most likely double the thickness. 8" is the safe point for a car to be on a lake.

1) too expensive
2) not enough time
3) Would make driving at night worse (light concentrated on one spot making the dark areas hard to see)
4) illegal (cannot have more than 2 low beams on public roads, excluding foglamps)

Where did you get it onto the lake? Did you use a boat launch or something? Back home, Greenwood Lake (crosses NJ/NY state line) freezes to more than a foot thick most winters, and I've seen pickup trucks out on the ice, but they've got the ground clearance and 4WD to get on and off the shore. Great pics man, looks hot. What SLR did he use?

Used a boat launch, didnt require any offroading. SLR was a Sony, we used a 1GB CF card, so you can imagine the quality this thing takes. Went through roughly 600mb of space. I also have a panoramic shot, but its like 14mb and 12000x2000 in size, so I gotta do some resizing.

What lake were you on?

Kinda looks like Minnetonka ... could be wrong though

EDIT: No ... it looks like EP actually, after I look at it ... at some apartments right off the highway. It's been a couple years ... but I remember seeing that building.

Mitchell Lake, its in eden prairie. No way im going on tonka, ive heard of too many stories of people going through the ice out there. This lake is much smaller, which means its much safer, and no DNR out here.

Yeah! I was right! I know exactly where you are!
My friends used to live there.

Tonka isn't that bad really ... my buddy would take his IRoc out around this time and we'd go out to the middle and whip ****ties and stuff.
I've heard a lot of stories too though, but those are from the morons who take a Dodge 3500 Super Duty towing 3 snowmobiles and an ice hut. heheheh

Driving on the lake is fun, but get your friend to buy a tripod or monopod so he can keep the camera straight and level

I hope you are kidding, he was holding that way to get some nice action shots. It's part of photography, and yes he has a tripod. You dont need the camera straight and level for every picture, its just part of the style of taking photos.

That looks like fun. Here in Colorado I don't really do much out on lakes, but I've been having a LOT of fun with snowy parking lots in the past few days. Just like ice, I only wonder if I do damage to the car by using the e-brake.

Yes I was serious... It's a way to take pictures. Everyone thinks tilting the camera somehow makes it an "action shot" when really it makes it look like the photographer is either or an idiot.

Well in my opinion I think it looks fine, and i've had no complaints about it yet until you stepped in the picture. So thats just another opinion in the crowd I guess.

lmao The guy has a dSLR which probably costed near $1000 if not way above that. He obviously has an interest in photography and a grasp of the basic concepts. Meanwhile here you are complaining about angles when they are a basic general art (and photography) technique that DOES convey movement when done correctly. Ever see professional photographs for car magazines? Stick to taking level pics of your car in your driveway and let this guy take his great shots in peace

Yes the camera is worth over $1000. Not to mention he uses several lenses for the camera. Not exactly a "starter" camera.

I beleive it was a Nikon, not sure of the model though.
