Engine Power 96 vs. 97

I own a 1996 Maxima GXE and a 1997 Maxima SE, both have around 105,000 miles. I primarily drive the 97 SE, however I have noticed that the 96 GXE seems more responsive and has a faster pickup. Any suggestions as to why this could be?????

thats the way it always is take a look around here all the fastest guys here are 95 & 96 i personally have a 99 and a 95 with the 95 only intake vs my y pipe intake and full 2.5" exhaust the 95 still stayed even and even beat me once!! thats just how it is i guess -Ryan

Not sure but I have heard that the 95 and 96 cars had less emissions restrictions to conform to which could have made them a little faster than the later models because of the less restriction.

i had 2 at one time and sold both, was looking to go with cattman headers but i keep on having unplanned expenses, the latest being new tires. My tires are the worst most unsafe piles of trash ever to be made! Never Ever use potenza's in snow!!!! youll crash! so now i need to decide what kind of tires to get i would rather just get rims and tires but i dont have enough i only have like $500

96 and 97 share the same engine and same engine control system. Stock engine horsepower is the same.
I am assuming they are both 5 speeds with factory rims.
A 97 SE would come fully loaded from the factory including 16" rims.
A base 96 GXE would come with 15" rims and will be lighter as well due to fewer options.
The smaller wheels alone will amount to a measurable increase in fwhp due to the lower rotational inertia.

General health of the engine is another often overlooked parameter. Is the compression in all of the cylinders in both vehicles within spec?

Maybe your anomaly is the result of driver skill. I have a 96, however i have no comparison so.........what do I know?

I don't agree that 95-96 Maximas are the fastest. 97's kick big **** around the org. I've yet to see a stock 4th gen auto beat my 97 in the 1/4. It's been a few years since I ran my times and I'm still waiting for someone to break the record.

yo icedout, i dont understand that website is that price for all 4 wheels and tires when it says that its a combo because when you go to add them to your cart it says like $899/ea ????? that doesnt make sense especially if theres like $150 per rim no way tires are that much. please explain, i may be stupid or else they messed up because theres no way any ADR rims are like $2000 some dollars alone lol

my 95 was 2/10 of a second faster than my 99 with essentially the same mods....except that the 95 had a racing clutch as where the 99 has an oem one. id say all in all the 95 seemed faster....

which ever year max i have is the fastest cause im a ricer and Years matter when it comes to fastest car even though if there the same model :sarcasm:

i would put money ANY DAY that a 99 max with 2kmiles vs. a 96max with 2kmiles, both SE will run the same, if not the 99 probably even better, i mean come on after 3 years of engineering they will do things to make it better. but on the other hand in 95 the maxima first came out as a 4th gen so they HAD to make it fast and noticeable so thats why they probably put less restrictions and made it powerful. and in 99 i guess the 4thgen made its mark, plus they see older ppl using it as a sedan, so they put more restrictions and made it like a camry. happy

i think it might have somthing to do with the feel while driving it aka my 95 obviously has 15" rims vs 16's on 99 and suspension 95 has the garbage gxe stuff and 99 has b&g's on gr-2's which makes a huge differnce especially form the going from a stop dept.
