Can You Still Have Codes When CEL is NOT On?

Hey, I was wondering, can you still have codes even if the CEL isn't lit on the dash? Thanks.

There aren't many but it is good to check if your car isn't preforming well....the most common is the ghost code for your knock sensor 0304 or something like that.

Sometimes the dash light can burn out, or if you aren't the first owner, someone else removed it. Check for the light when you turn on the ignition before you start the car to make sure it lights. It should light, then go out when you start it.

Those are called "pending" if the ECU spots lets say a missfire in cylinder#5 , the ECU will record the missfire in memory, and it will continue to monitor cylinder #5 , if the missfire happens again in certain treshold it will turn on the check engine light.

The very first day i've recived my Auterra scanner i went and disconnected few sensors and watched the ECU record those as pending codes. After few warm up and drive cycles the codes were earased by ECU.

Nick.
