Stereo Volume Problem

I have a '96 Maxima with original stereo (AM/FM with cassette) and the volume has a mind of its own. It works, then doesn't. It will be set and then blast loud and then I can only turn it down to a certain level. It seems to be OK when I first turn it on and then it goes wacko on me. Any suggestions?

Get a used HU, for now try pushing the knob to one side, there should be one place it works perfect.

I have the same problem. You really need to develope a touch with it. It doesn't seem to like sudden motions, so be real slow with it. The worst is when it gets too loud and you can't get it back down. Not sure I would get a new HU just to have it do the same thing. Unless you can get it cheap.

you may have a bad variable resistor. get it changed or get a new HU

Thanks for the advice. I think I will run by a car stereo place and see what they say. Probably say I need one of their nice new fancy stereos, I bet!

get a compressed can of air and go crazy on the volume knob (use the straw provided). there is a LOT of dust behind the knob. i had this problem and it almost fixed it all the way....
