leaking rack and pinion

Hey guys!

Need your advice. I got a leaking rack and pinion on my 97 max. Its dripping from where all the lines are connecting into it. I was told to replace it but I am wondering if it can be repaired and if its worth repairing it?

Also is it possible to find a Nissan remanufactured rack and pinion? because when i called Nissan they said they dont have that program and that they only sell new one's for $1200 but a good local shop that repairs alot of maxima's told me that they only use remanufactored Nissan Rack and pinions because the aftermarket one's tend to leak again and they dont want to risk doing the big job over again.

i was told the remanufactured Nissan rack is $380 while the other brand is $150. Can this be true or am I being ripped off?

Find the TSB. With 97's i believe, you should just look at tightening hoses, as they weren't tightened properly at the factory.

auto parts stores will generally have rebuilts available to order....expect a stiff core charge and probably a $300 tab for the part. I agree...check the fittings first. You can buy a lot of fluid for $300....unless it turns into a safety hazard (steering get stiff suddenly for example) I wouldn't consider replacement yet.

good luck,
JB
