Will not pass smog!!!!!!

My 96 will not pass smog. I've had it tested for the second time yesterday after paying for it a second time, and they're saying something about trouble with the "monitors"....? Two weeks ago I changed the knock sensor and had to reset the ECU to clear the code. I was told that I'm not passing smog because the codes were manually cleared and i'd need to put miles on the car. Well, Ive driven it a little over 500mi in the last 2weeks and i'm still failing. It also has nothing to do with emissions, since I pass the emissions part. Anyone know what I can do to fix this? Any suggestions?

do you get the OBDII test? i've had problems inspecting cars after the ECU was reset and they wouldn't pass for 2-4 weeks. There is supposedly a certain drive cycle you have to put your car through, but it is a huge pain because you never have the right place to do it at. Just drive it around a bit more and see what happens.

Yes, I did do the OBD II test, and had to clear the code using that. I tried driving it 60miles and not turning it when I got it to the SMOG station...That's what they told me to do, and it didn't work they said it was still "1 more monitor that needs to be set", and to "have the tech run a scan before he puts it on the machine"....I can't make much sense out of that since I don't know "SMOG lingo"...lol

yeah, next time you go, see if they can hook up the scan tool to see if all of the moniters are ready before you get it tested. if not, just keep driving. Might be cheaper to get your own scan tool to check the moniters yourself.

I had the same issues as you with my smog inspection. The emissions test passed, but not the monitor readiness. I kept going back week after week and the monitors kept saying not ready, they were nice and would just let me come in and plug in the car into their OBDII monitor on the smog machine. The limit is 2 in California, and my car had 3 that were not ready. I think that I finally put in over 1500 miles and one of them kicked in. The guys at the shop were pretty cool, they did not charge me for the multiple times I went back to check the monitors. When enough monitors kicked it, I drove the car for a little while to get the cat nice and hot (I have an aftermarket Y-pipe), and came back and passed the test. It was a total pain to go throught this, but hopefully you will have the same outcome as me
