Rear Calipers

I took my 98 Max w/ 65k to the dealer for brakes...they said that the rear calipers were shot as well as the rotors and pads, anyone have both of their rear calipers need being replaced...I thought most of the braking is from the front

Rear calipers are known to be a problem on our cars. You can get aftermarket calipers, pads and rotors much cheaper then Nissan components.

i had a rear caliper go out on me, the rubber surround on the piston is what was causing the trouble

i just pulled it off and replaced both of the rear ones....then just replaced the front two and braking is pretty darn good

Yes, the misconception is that calipers are ruined from the outside-in. The reality is they corrode from the inside-out. As brake fluid absorbs moisture, it not only lowers its boiling point, but also corrodes steel components. So the prevent is to flush/bleed the brake fluid and replace with fresh fluid. I have heard that as often as every two years is recommended, but the cost is not that expensive considering how much the hardware costs. I stay away from coolant and brake fluid as they are nasty/toxic substances.
