Can I program my own '99 security chip key?

The dealer wants $60 for a new key. Fine - that hurts but I can deal with that. What I can't deal with is the $81 in labor (on top of the $60) just to program the key to my car. Is this something I can do myself and save the $81? I was told no because they use 'a special Nissan computer'.

Thanks Manual. You are probably right but I was hoping. I know we can program our own remotes so I was hoping.

Anybody else know?

Thats a negative. Chip is built into the key, although something doesn't sound right there. When I got my 99se they told me if I needed a replacement key all I needed to do was call some 800 number tell them I lost the key, and then give them the ID number that was on the spare key set and they would ship me a new one for some unknown fee. I was not made aware of any stealership labor fee for anything.

The local Nissan dealer clearly said I would buy the key from parts for $60 and then make an appointment for an hour's worth of labor to have the new key (and all my old ones) programmed. Mmmaxx, do you have the 1-800 number you mentioned? Thanks.

nope, unless you know a private automotive key programmer

Dealer tells me, 50$ a key, $85+ an hour for labor to program the key.

You can't. Even the used car dealership I work at has to have the dealership do it. There is a hardware store around here that does them for like $50 total if you have the original so you might try calling around.

i paid $60.00 dollars for the chip key at a local locksmith, the guy programmed it free. he had a T-CODE OBD II that he plugged to OBD II in fuse box. he put in original key in ignition , then new key. it takes 5 minutes. in my opinion do a GOOGLE on T-CODE.

It takes like less than 5 min to reprogram the keys. It is a damn hand held device, f#@kn rip off.

I have reprogramed vw by sticking 1 key in the ignition and the other in the driver door and turning it a certain way so it could work
