I have found during my 60K mile service, if you are having trouble with an auto transmission and downshifting, replace the PCV valve. Mine was sticking (not completely plugged) and after chaanging just that part, the problems are gone!

the PCV valve is hidden right around where the throttle cable is, look behind in there, you will see it with a small clamp on it. Im tryin to describe where it is without goin to my car cause im too lazy, hehe. Its a ***** to change but can be done, use a long body needle nose pliar to get it off. It was like $2-3 at Pep Boys if even that much....

Here is the link that I used:

To answer the other questions:
The problem I was having was a brief hesitation, especially while cold, when accelerating. If you were taking off from a stop, it would happen about 1-2 seconds into the launch in every gear (auto trans). This would also gradually get less as the engine warmed up and the longer I drove, but it never went away completely. The other problem was when I went into a turn, or did anything to cause me to slow down, then speed back up, the auto trans would not downshift without pushing down on the gas pedal much more than I thought necessary. Now I know this all sounds subjective, but if you had driven this car when it was doing this, you would immeddiately have noticed the same thing. After changing the PCV valve, those problems went away. The car now downshifts very smoothly, and at the appropriate times.

I was wondering

what is the purpose of the PCV value (what does it do?) I wasn't sure if I should have changed it at 30K?
so I can just get one from pep-boys and not have to worry that it is not oem Nissan?

Postive Crankcase Ventilation-It recirculates the blow-by from the engine back into the air-stream to be burned. If it plugs up, the pressure will build until one of your gaskets gives way and you have an oil leak. This apparently can also cause havoc in your vacuum system which will affect everything else. Yeah, you can go to pep-boys to get the part, it only costs about $3. I went to Advance Auto.

Factory one cost me $8. Oh yea... when I first got the valve, they gave me the wrong one, so I had to take a 20 min trip to get the correct pcv valve.
