4 speed auto->5 speed auto

Anyone try converting the 4 speed from our gen max to a 5 speed auto from one of the newer ones? I'm assuming it'd be a lot cheaper than the manual conversion, but i was wondering how well it would work and what all would be needed to do it. My main complaint with my 4 speed auto is 3rd and 4th gear because they are really lacking at highway speeds (especially above 70-80). Anyone have a clue if this would work or anyone have it done?

that's what i'm thinking too, but if it's cheaper and easier than the manual conversion, it may be a possibility

Well first off, you have to find out if the bell housing can fit up to the VQ30, motor mounts, and computer for the transmission.. all of which are pretty much unanswered right now. Thats just the big things, shift cable and other things are another problem.

the new transmissions wont even line up with the VQ35 with the way they are mounted on the 05's. The 05's are mounted exactly like the 02-05 3rd gen altimas.
youd have to do a full motor swap including ecu, wiring harness, motor, tranny, mounts, everything..... if ya do it, have fun

i wish there was a better auto tranny we could use so we wouldnt have to go through the whole tranny swap at least the 01 is a little smoother with 1-2 shift :/

wouldnt really be any quicker, just lower rpms at higher speeds which would result in better gas mileage. The auto tranny in the maxima is not so bad anyways, ive seen alot worse and such in DSM's, E36 beemers, and B series automatics in hondas/acuras, and even in the new altima, that transmission blows, makes the car lag out and robs it of a good 15-17 hp.... stock 2.5 5speeds run around a 7.6 0-60 and a 15.4 quarter when the auto runs 8.6 0-60 and a 16.2 quarter. Im quite happy with the tranny myself compared to other vehicles.

I doubt the 2.5 runs 15.4 1/4 mile.

Oh yeah the tranny is throttle by wire so theres no throttle cable. You would have to find out how to convert it.

This is stupid.

1. Doing this project would be just as expensive and significantly more difficult than just an MT swap.

2. The gearing in the 5Spd auto is designed to work with the latest rendition of the VQ35. It will be better for the 3.0 but to what degree is unknown without knowing the gear ratios.

3. The 4th gen's 4Spd auto is toward the higher end when it comes to quality and performance of an auto.

4. There is no throttle cable connected to a tranny. LOL.

5. 5Spd auto's are not a new thing. They've been around in Sub $50K cars for at least 3 years. Yes they increase potential of the auto but there power losses are still as present as ever. If a car came with two auto tranny options and the gearing were well designed I'd imagine the 5Spd would trump the 4Spd by something like .3 seconds.
