A guy wants to race me he has a 99 non GT mustang, Automatic. Are these slow? I would think that it couldnt be that fast. I have a 97 GXE Automatic with Intake you think I can take him? Thanks

I sure hope you beat a non GT mustang.. and its auto. THat is about as slow as they get man. I have seen those thigns run from 16.4-low 15's (w/ mods). If he is modded that can be a prob. IF your stock you should get him.

No worries. Unless hes heavely modded you should take him. I walked a GT convertable that Im pretty sure was an automatic. We were already going and I wasnt pulling hard on him at all (maybe beat him by 1/2 car length or so), but that was against a GT, you should have no problem with a six. Oh yeah and that was with only the intake and cat-back. Tell me how it goes. Happy hunting.

You should be fine

I have raced a few mustangs myself, and they are slow. I have a 5 speed, and a six cylinder pony with a manual lost, not to mantion automatic. The only engine mod I have is an intake. The GT is not as fast as I thought either. I took on a GT auto, and won by just a little. Enough to call it a win.

C&D just tested a 2001 (same powertrain as '99) GT convertible w/ automatic (basically the slowest GT model) and it ran 0-60 in 6.0, unsure of 1/4 mile.

Motor Trend lists a '99 6cyl/auto convertible at:

0-60: 8.6 sec
1/4 mile: 16.5 @ 85.5 mph.

also, a 99 5-speed GT coupe:
0-60: 5.4 sec
1/4 mile: 14.0 @ 100.2 mph

Based on these figures, you need a pretty fast Maxima to run with the GTs and could probably beat the 6cyl with two fat guys in the back and running on three cylinders

The mustang is an absolute dog.

Unless its a GT it is a POSER. It's your dad's GM in a different shell. You can take him at any speed any day, under any conditions. If he's got mods then it's different.

You've also got to realize that it takes lots of skill to get the same figures as C&D in a car with that much torque at the rear wheels. It takes lots of finesse to keep the wheels from spinning and to keep the engine from being bogged down.

The old fox-bodies were really quick though. They were continuously faster than the Camaros and Trans Am's of their time.
